Teak Decked Yacht - 2 But or not 2 Buy

Is the teak deck in question glued or screwed. (are there plugs visible). Screwing a teak deck onto a glassfibre stucture has always seemed perverse. You start out with a waterproof structure and then drill thousands of holes in it. At least bavaria glue their teak down. If it does come loose re glueing is massively less work than chasing leaks in a screwed deck.

My Bavaria of similar age has glued teak strips (guess about 4mm thick) in the cockpit. We shied off a full teak deck when new because of the concerns about life. However thay seem to stand up well. Ours has a few areas in the high wear/stress areas such as the curved helm seat where the caulking is breaking out, but otherwise is fine.

So, if it is glued down on the Benny then there is no problem with water ingress unless through bolted on fittings that go through the cored deck. (Bavaria fittings mostly go into tapped plates) and it is not worn then I would not be too worried. However, if it does need replacing it is likely to be a bigger job to glue a new deck on as they are pre-formed in a jig and vacuum bagged onto the deck when new!

the Scottish climate is prone to the occasional rain shower

Hi D, How did this story play out for you? I'm position considering a 16 year-old Benneteau on which my surveyor tells me that some, maybe 5% by area, of the teak is "departing" from the deck on a '97 36 CC.

Thanks,
D

P.S. I'm from the hot, deep south of the US, but writing from Edinburgh on a raining evening... I'll take it over 40 degrees Celsius during the summer. I guess the is always greener...
