Teak deck repairs

We are looking at a 50 ft early 90's boat with teak decks, they are in need of renovating/repair.
There is still about 7 or 8 mm minimum depth left, my question is can they be refinished and re caulked,or do we have to budget on replacement.
Anybody with any ideas of cost or who to talk to for budget figure prior to purchase would be a great help

Rather than guessing it is best to get a couple of estimates as there are different methods of construction and different ways of making good depending on the nature of the damage. Can be as relatively simple as re-caulking to rebedding sections, replacing bungs and fastenings if a screwed deck, and dependent on whether you just want a cosmetic improvement or a long term fix. So cost could range from low £000's to £15-20k.
 
Forgot to say the teak is screwed and teak bungs glued in, there doesn't appear to be any loose planks,there is however one that is very pitted but this one is thankfully only about 4ft long.
Has anyone had this done professionally or is it a case of DIY ?

You can DIY, but hard work. The problem with screwed and bunged decks that thin is that once you start levelling them the bungs pop out as the countersinks are inevitably shallow with little room for further sinking. Same with recaulking depending on how deep the original seams were. There are so many points where water can get under the teak and then potentially into the GRP that what may start off as a simple recaulking ends up much bigger. Typically a deck like the one you describe needs refurbishment after 10-15 years and replacement at 20-25 so the boat is in the window where it could require major work. So, really worth getting an expert opinion.

+1 on the word of warning. Some time ago a looked into buying a -91 boat with screwed decks. Survey confirmed my worries in that water had gotten into the cored decks, fixing of which would have obviously been major work. Initial estimates were +20k€.

Just had our 50ft boat ( sail) redone, she is a 1990 boat and has about 35sqm Teak, had many quotes but eventually went for a permateak deck at about 15k a real teak deck best quote was 29k but at least now pretty much maintenance free.

Sanding etc will cost 00o,s and need to be redone in 2 years maybe IMHO

we have recaulked our 22yo boat (70ft) a year ago

our teak was similar to yours, from orriginal 12mm only 6..8mm left,
Caulking grooves were very thin, or gone,

we had a retired carpenter making the grooves deeper, with a router, and then filling again with caulk, and after long drying period, sanding.
the job was easy doable, could also be done DIY

the end result was good,

I have to admid that we had a few small leaks, caulking material not completely filled / glued in the groove,
but these were easyly repaired afterwards.
(take out the bad, and put in new caulking material, with masking tape along the groove edges)

I did it on my 40ft boat.took me 2winters on and off under a tent.very do-able,very satisfying and you get to know you're deck intimately.all you need to know is on the web,google restoring teak decks,I knew nothing and made a stunning job so I've been told.saved myself 9grand,have been offered others to do.no thanks once is enough.
P.s. buy the caulking on e bay you will save a fortune.
