Apart from K J Howells of Poole, does anyone know of a cheaper source for a teak cockpit grating?

Thanks for any reply.

I've had a very attractive quote from Thai Teak for a grate. Has anyone bought from them? Are their products well made, and what import duties/VAT did you have to pay?

Make your own! They are not that difficult to make and there are many "plans" on the web.
There is a very reasonable source of Teak in Jamestown (Aitkin Howard) and they have a machining facility as well although I always buy off saw timber and resaw and machine it myself!

Have you thought about constructing your own?

I was in a Travis Perkins in Exeter recently & was suprised to find that they had both Iroko (African Teak) & American Oak, both very usable for your project.

I see no reason at all why you should not try yourself there are many references to Iroko supplies on the net & I am sure there will be someone on here who can point you in the right direction for design & construction.

I commisioned and designed with their help a binocular rack- see it on their website and my commendation

Excellent service and very helpful

Small item- no HM.C & E interest but postage for a small item disproportionately high, otherwise everything perfect

Today I sanded off my brand new teak cockpit grating by Howells of Poole and it looks just grate!
Very nice indeed.
Carpentry and certainly not joinery are not something I am any good at.

The kit is well presented and well made. I do agree that the price made my eyes water but most of Howells stuff is pretty inexpensive compared to the same items in chandlers around here so I suspect 'custom made' teak grating is not cheap anywhere. They appear to be a good company to do business with.
