Hi All,

Does anyone know where I can get a nice teak and holly cabin sole made up? We were looking at a boat at the weekend that had a marine ply sole covered in carpet, and if we go ahead and buy the boat then we will want to change it.

I have heared that you can get stick on laminate rather than get the whole lot replaced. Does anyone have any experience?

Thanks
David

Noticed the laminate when we visited Hawke House a couple of weeks ago. A good firm to deal with, very helpful.

I had a teak and holly cabin sole made by KJ Howells and was very pleased with the result. I did have a friend draw up a very detailed cutting plan of what we wanted in terms of pieces so that we could get it out of an 8x4 sheet. We had most of it lipped in teak. Howells made sure that they took into account saw cut widths and lipping to ensure that all the holly lines lined up.

A couple of pictures of it below prior to varnishing

Here you can see the lipping

The only drawback I have (apart from the cost of this kind of thing) is that it isn't quite as hard as I had hoped. Maybe I just need lots more varnish.

KJ Howells are at http://www.k.j.howells.dial.pipex.com/ - I've no connection with them - they exhibit at the boat shows so perhaps you could have a chat with them in Southampton. I dealt with a guy called Rob who was very good.

Ha! No - down the shed. Stood it on newspaper and as per usual it stuck to it. What with having to remove flys and other insects fatally attracted to it, it would have probably been less hassle to varnish it on the carpet!

I don't have one of these floors, but I'm very surprised to hear it is varnished at all. Doesn't that make it unacceptably slippery? I thought the point of teak was its good non-slip qualities when bare.

I used a matt floor varnish (ronseal or something similar) mainly to protect the wood from spills and damp. It is only a thin veneer of teak and holly on a ply carrier.
