Hi folks as title suggests i have a 2 stroke outboard and looking online there seems to be 2 different types available...

Both are TCW3 but...

Option 1 - 5L for £23 (unbranded)
Option 2 - 4L for £40 (Quicksilver)

Is there any difference between the two or am i just simply paying for the brand as they are both proper marine grade 2 stroke TCW3?

I'd rather not get ripped off and pay £17 for a sticker on the front of a bottle and have 1L less.

Is there any particular reason the Quicksilver is more expensive or the one that most dealers try and push you into buying?

Penny for your thoughts cheers

I've been using non-brand TCW3 on various 2-strokes for years now, they're still running.

I was buying in bulk from Germany (approx. 50 litres at a time) and I think I was paying approx. €4-5 per litre

Yeah i just typed into Ebay..."TCW3 marine oil" and there are a few different options but the cheapest was £23 for 5L.

Then i typed Quicksilver marine oil and it's the same TCW3 but 1 litre less for £40!

I know it doesn't break the bank but 2 strokes are pretty thirty machines and coupled with 30L of fuel and just pottering around my local slipway will end up costing the same as paying for a ticket on a charter.

Im currently pre-mixing at 50:1 so for 30L of fuel i need 600ml of oil which comes to 6.6 trips for every bottle of £40 Quicksilver oil + £35 petrol.

BUT if the Quicksilver is a better grade and gives longer engine life I'd rather protect my engine and pay it.

Would work out cheaper than a seized engine in the long run.

Does buy cheap...buy twice stand in this situation or will running on cheaper stuff be fine long term?

Cheers folks ?

I can confirm that i have been using the right oil see attachment...phew!

Mine is a 1994 Mercury 2cyl 2stroke oil injection model...i dont know what age the oil grades covers.

TBH i didn't even think of it until you just mentioned it...hope I've been using the right stuff, Think i better check the manual...oops!
Using the TCW3 in an older engine is fine - probably burns cleaner.
My Evinrude 3hp was made in 1966. I have no idea what oil was used in it for the first 5 decades of its life

Well unless any of you guys can give me a specific reason not to use the cheap stuff i think i will opt for the cheapy. Means i will be able to get more oil for my money = more trips out!

Thanks so much guys very much appreciated ?

In my opinion...it would depend what engine it’s for. Id always use TCW3 oil on any marine outboard that isn’t a Di exception to the rule.

The quicksilver stuff is so expensive for what it is. I personally can’t see past the superb rock oil MP3 tcw3. It’s of a superb quality and you get 5 litres of it for less than 4 litres of quicksilver.
