All good suggestions........but for the fact that they fall outside of tcm's spec on account of age/being too racy/furling main.

well, the 47.7s are great for whamming along altho bit much for lazy cruising.

The howlett is solidish looking but um, same sort of argument against anything pre97 is blimey it is already ten years old so all the systems are say 20 years old design and at least ten years old physically so it'll be one continuous fight against the advancing oldness of most if not all kit some of wich wasn't thatclever when new - and yet at the end of it one has a fixed-up unspecial 10-20 year old boat so a bit like restoring an eighties Jag which yes will feel more special than modern AWB but mainly contains more wood with much practial skill to overcome lack of computer-assisted anything.

Many say these are "better built" but as tome points out they inlcude design decisions like a 50hp engine in a 20ton boat so heh, not that brilliant throughout.

The elliots are nice but i bet the owners suffered with big windows in hot weather.
 
Spent a good hour looking at a big Canadian registered Amel when we were in Kinsale, and the owner was very enthusiastic. Just couldn't help shuddering at the 'teak' - looked so utterly wrong

I have looked at your requirements and rationale and think you are incredible intelligent!!

I agree with everything you write. I bought a Jeanneau because of build quality and Yanmar engine (never ever again a Volvo). Main difference was that 43' is cheaper to berth and as a charter boat it is more attractive to many that would be concerned trying to berth a 49 or 54Ds in a south coast marina.

I personally like the Arcona 46, Finngulf 46 and the X boat 46 but cannot justify the additional £175k over a Jeanneau but would not deny that they are superior boats.

I am surprised though that you cannot easily pick up a reasonable secondhand 49 or 54 Jeanneau DS. Someone must be having second thoughts about the cost of ownership with Marina charges just being rendered and lets face it a boat is a dream to many people and a lot find the reality (how much they actually manage to use it etc) a lot less attractive.
 
Are you interested in ex-charters? There must be plenty of them here (in Greece). Most of them in very good condition.

They mostly are what you're looking for (in-mast reefing, powerful engine, generally aiming at the easy-going sailor). VAT not paid, but you said that it's ok with you.

[/ QUOTE ] Nope!! Just means the boat is well set up for a full social life if that's what you are in to... pleasant space to have a drink and shoot the breeze.
I think Halberg Rassy, Oyster, Amel, Warquiez are all boats that offer an elegant life style, keep their 2nd hand price and can go anywhere if required - note I am getting attached to the better French manufactures!!

Hanse 531 on Windemere - tell me this is a joke! If I could afford a boat like that, I doubt I would keep it on Windermere. Or maybe this was just the "weekend" boat? Owner probably has others in Caribbean / Med/wherever

The older Hanse's from 4 or 5 yrs ago were IMHO horrible inside and outside. The latest generation looks much more interesting on the outside. but I haven't been in them. I'd be interested to see. Which are you thinking of?
