Re: I suspect that

you'll find there's a better chance that they'll add tax on deisel before they knock it off petrol.

Don't push your luck springs to mind.

Re: I suspect that

Your not joking. Look at those half-witted feminists who went on about men and women having the same conditions on pensions etc, so the governemnt said fine, we'll increase the retirement age for women to 65.

You can tell when politicians are lying - their lips are moving.

Re: I suspect that

Brussels already have their eye on us in this respect. Many EU Countries make no differential between Road Fuel & Agricultural & the Beurocrats (is that spelt correctly) would like to see us paying the same across Europe.

I doubt it will be long before the tax goes on.

Would it really matter?

Not for us raggies. Most of the fuel I use to go sailing is already taxed - its just the bit from the marina to the harbour entrance that isn't.

Not for those stinkies. They'd just have even more excuse for staying put. But a tax on boat-wax, now that would really hurt.

Your right of course but a penny saved is a penny towards my next beer.

Re: I suspect that

Am I wrong in thinking that our present concession on diesel tax expires in 2007?

BTW you have spelt bureaucrats wrongly.

Might be a moot point, but is there tax charged on fuel for commercial boats? In some places, in the world, there is a tax on
pleasure boat fuel, but fishing boats, water taxi's, tow boats, etc. do not pay a fuel tax. If not, seems like there could be alot more
commercial boats around.

You can claim back the road duty on marine petrol if you use the boat as part of a legitimate marine business. Contact your local Customs and Exise office for the necessary form. You can go back three years, providing you have receipts. This is quite a closely guarded secret by HMG, but I know of at least two firms (one of them a sea school using RIBs,) who have recovered thousands! As for low duty diesel, the 2007 deadline is vague, and was mooted as part of a Euro-wide policy of having all fuel fixed at the same price to encouage fair trade. The RYA should have the latest on how that is going.
An experiment in America to have high-duty white diesel for leisure boats, and red diesel for commercial, failed miserably - suppliers couldn't be bothered to fit two tanks, so catered instead for their biggest customers - the commercial user. The leisure user (often successful businessmen) lobbied hard, and the scheme was dropped. For the revenue collected, it just wasn't worth the grief! Could happen here to....

Re: I suspect that

Thort it was a 7 year concession from 2002, so 2009(?) and even then it's not cut and dried, open for review again.

If we all had to pay tax on diesel, we'd all be using nice low-sulphur fuel instead of the poisonous red muck. Something to be said for this, quite apart from the fact that it's absurd to put pleasure sailors in the same box as professional seafarers.
