Hi All

Holding tank questions re Targa 40.

I've attached a picture as I am trying to ensure I am able to use the macerator correctly to empty the holding tank. From what I can see there are 4 pipes connecting to the tank. These will be -

1. Toilet waste pipe
2. Shore Pump Out waste pipe
3. Macerator waste pipe overboard
4. Haven't got a clue! Overboard direct discharge is a midships nearer the heads

The Targa 40 manual states there should be a y valve of sorts by the holding tank to select the macerator or pump out to empty the holding tank. However the only y valve is before the actual holding tank to select holding tank or overboard discharge which is midships near the heads.

I tried the macerator at sea when bringing the boat home, and it worked but the guage did not decrease so not sure if I am missing a setting. But I just cant see a selector between macerator and pump out??

Any ideas?

From left in your pic the pipes are
- dockside pumpout
- waste in
- overboard pumpout
- breather

To divert black water to tank vs directly overboard you use the diverter valve under the saloon floor in front of the door to the heads. To pump the tank out, you open the seacock then operate the discharge macerator pump. I close the seacock again afterwards otherwise the tank will slowly backfill with seawater. The mostly likely cause of the gauge not changing is that the sender is stuck.

Many thanks JTB.

Any tips on a stuck sender valve?

Also - random folding wooden board with a stainless leg attached found in the holding tank locker. Attached 2 pics - do you know what its for???

1. er, clean it. Probably the least unpleasant way to do this is remove it from tank and descale (I use hydrochloric acid for this)
2. it's the saloon sofa infill panel. There should be a cushion to go with this

Hang on - Hydrochloric Acid? That sounds pretty lethal. Wouldn’t I be best just anti bac’ing it!
