Targa 40 cockpit backrest removal

Guilty re a s58. Used more diesel sadly.

He pic you posted it pretty much the colour I have from what I can tell

I could not decide if I had contrasting piping my or not. On the Williams I did on the main boat I did not. That was a minor mistake. The beige with a light charcoal / grey piping looks really good.

Jimmy, any chance you could post some pics up of this swim platform you have done.. cant seem to find pics on here .. im interested

All the pics in the rebuild thread have gone, thanks to photobucket. I actually don't have many of the finished article, this is just after the teak was done:

The T40 is a really great boat.

The platform Jimmy has done is totally OEM. I never noticed it was small when i owned it - and now it has a "real" platform I think it finishes the boat.

When the V39 came out there was press "hysteria" as to how amazing this £500k ish boat was ... i did wonder if any of the journalists had ever been on a T40! Jimmys with new fabrics, nice table, platform is a winning boat. I know he spent more than he cares to add up, but given the cost to change etc It is a pretty good outcome.

Whilst not quite as extreme as Jimmy ( removing the engines so they look nice!) I am doing something similar with my S58.

For about £300k all in I will have an utterly sorted boat where most of what you see - exterior fabrics - cabin linings are new and most kit has been bought upto date or properly serviced / refurbished. I probably wont replace carpets only as they are Ok and the kids will wreck now ones anyway! USB sockets in the cabins, LED lights, water maker, refurbed upper helm and seats ( biggest sign of wear as it is the most exposed) and so on. I enjoy it!

If a boat is a keeper the pleasure in refurb ( if it is your thing) as long as the underlying boat and mechanicals are sound is i think a good way to go.

Pre divorce i had a new S65. It was 4 times the price and i miss almost nothing about it other than the mid cabin - and that has nothing to do with space as i only sleep there - but to do with wave slap on anchor which drives me nuts!

Its a shame that there is not really a business in bringing older boats upto new spec. I gather ( princess??) used to offer factory refurb boats that were returned to new pre sale - but i suppose they stopped that for a reason!

JTB please stop posting enviable pics of your T40, it's depressing me. Now I am going to have to get a second mortgage to get such a nice swim platform on mine.

Quick post resurrection re T40 reupholstering.

JTB - you gave some step by step instructions to remove all the seating in the cockpit. Under the port backrests and fore and aft seating back rests you have vinyl sheeting (mine is white in this instance contrasting against my blue seat upholstery). It is not a cushion or backrest, just seems to be fitted against solid structure or panels. Did Tockfield fit your silvertex to that or did you do it yourself? If Tockfield how,did you remove the panels? Sorry if it makes no sense...........

I'm not sure I understand your description, sorry. I removed all the upholstery components and just gave them to Tockfield, I didn't do any of the actual reupholstery work myself.

Have attached a pic. Arrows point to the parts I mean. They’re not the actual cushions but is part of the seating area...

Jimmy's instructions were great. Finding the screw holes in the U seat backing was fun but at least I now know how to remove without doing damage.

So, removing the cockpit upholstery:
- starting at the helm seat (which is itself just bolted on to the seat runners), the most difficult component to remove is the padded panel on the starboard side, where the vhf and water/holding tank gauges are. Because of the shape of this panel it is through-bolted, and to get to the bolts you have to remove the ceiling over the starboard porthole in the mid cabin (where the curtain tracks are), and then reach right up (it is difficult) to find the five or so m4 or m5 studs. The top one is quite a stretch.
- on the portside seating, opposite the helm, the forward-most backrest pad next to the saloon door just slides upwards and will then come off
- the 'island' backrest between the main cockpit seating and the forward cockpit seating is just a friction fit, lift it up and it'll come off
- the main seating backrests along the port side of the cockpit are held in place with hidden screws located underneath the padded part of the backrest, you have to feel them with your fingers. Once removed, the backrests slide upwards to remove. You'll find a few (obvious) self-tappers that need to be removed where the island backrest has been removed
- the base of these island backrest is bolted into the main moulding, you'll need 450mm extension bar to undo these
- the convertible backrest at the aft end of the cockpit is a u-shaped moulding around the stainless steel rails and has velcro fixing along the bottom edge; just pull this apart and the whole component can then slide upwards and off
- finally there is a very small aft-facing panel at the very back of the cockpit seating, on the starboard side. This is just a friction-fit with four plastic studs, so just carefully lever this off using a plastic trim podger or similar

I think that's it. You may find a bit of silicone sealant (not sika) along the bottom of the backrest moulding, but this should be tiny and shouldn't present a problem in removal.

In terms of replacement fabric, the Silvertex is excellent, I did mine in a mix of titanium and charcoal and I'm really pleased with it.

Finally, I used Tockfield to re-do mine, because they have the Fairline logo heat-brand which is a nice OE touch on the new upholstery.

Just about to give this a go. Wish me luck lol!

thought i may aswell update the dash a bit, the old grey carbon stuff was looking bit tired and lifting in places..

i think it looks better now with new drk grey/black carbon. easy job thats makes look so much cleaner :encouragement:
