I want to inspect the connections to my port tacho. On a recent 28NM trip to Las Fuentes, the gauge went wild, settling at full scale deflection?

Engine speeds were synchronised, the boat handled very well on the return trip cruising very nicely at 3000rpm and 32 knots (needed to get back quick to avoid heavy winds in Sant Carles last night!). Once again the tacho went wild.

I suspect a faulty connection but dont know how to get behind the dash to inspect/remove the tacho! So before I seek out fixings and the like - does anyone know how to do this?

A picture of my dash - Many thanks:

Mines the MK1, but removal, I guess is the same.

Undo the 2 screws holding the tacho panel in place.

Lift panel outwards, revealing the rear of the meters.

Undo the "U" bracket which holds the meter in place.

Then disconnect the leads and the light.

Twist the meter free from the black collar and it all comes free.

The Black Volvo Collars are very brittle so take care. I now keep spares on the boat!

They are cheap though.

Should your panel not have screws fitted, you can probably access via the inspection hatch at the helm / under the steering wheel.

Hope this is of help.

Questor has it! Removed the panel below the helm. Three nurled nuts on long studs secure the panel. With these removed the panel lifts out and you can then remove the tacho via the normal 'U' shaped securing bracket. Front bezel can the easily be removed by rotating.

Did not find any loose connections, anyway cleaned and reconnected. We shall see if this cures the problem. If not I may change port to starboard, if it is the gauge the fault should tansfer with it!

Thanks for your help......

No Wurries!

Just spent the afternoon stuck inside my inspection panel replacing a very overpriced lead linking the plotter to radar, as not all the data was coming through as it should.

Very chuffed as it all works again.

Good luck with the tachos.

i have spare Volvo Penta tachos available if anyone wants any.
i have the 3000rpm & 4000rpm type with the built in digital hour meters.
they are brand new & boxed but do not come with the front plastic bezel but you can just swap this from your old unit. £40 each (about 48 available)
