Yes. We took the ferry across from Portavadie - we did try to sail round - but a very clever Race Officer had the class one boats on a windward/leeward course from Skipness to Ostel (Kilbride) bay. Lot of boats were turning back as there was no way into Loch Fyne. I certainly wasn't going to enforce my rights with boats travelling at up to 15 knots!

My nephew was crewing this year and he said the prices were diabolical. Mentioned the Victoria especially. To be honest he also said that a lot of the crews were knackered due to the sometimes testing conditions. Maybe that was the reason it seemed so quiet.

Cant say the CCC was fully at fault this year. The good burghers of Tarbert need to get real and treat this as a fantastic boon to the town and not as a chance to rip people off.

Apparently the word is getting around. I was there last weekend and was rafted two out from the pontoon. Took the dog for a walk into town and expected the pubs to be fairly busy with that many visitors, but at 21.00 on the Saturday night the Vic was empty apart from a few peeps on the patio.
Same went for the Frigate, Tarbert hotel and Anchorage. The only place moderately busy was the Corner House (I nogted the back bar is now a bistro).
I ate on the boat... it seems most folk did the same.
The pontoon berthing charges have been hiked as well.

We were there the same weekend. In the past, Tarbert was always a fun place to go - even if busy at times and was handy if guests aboard instead of anchoring.

The Vic has been going downhill for a long time now. It used to be the place for yachties and regularly had entertainment on.

We much prefer - when eating ashore - to go to the Anchor Hotel. Seems well priced and good food. Of course, you cant beat the chilli in the cafe(the one with the art deco frontage) - cant remember the name. Exceptional value. Fish tea for about £6.

Prices for the pontoons are getting silly. They must be earning megabucks from the space they have already and should really extend.

Have cut down the number of times we go there. Shame.

Have not berthed in ELT for yonks. Pubs poor, food worse and charges for pontoon ridiculous. If everyone boycotted ELT they would soon get their act together but there will always be some who will pay and put up with the crappy pubs and the "Tarbert Tummy". We anchor nearby if up that way and eat on board - Better food and the bar is well stocked (usually).. I've said it before, I blame the punters for putting up with it, not the burghers of ELT for ripping folk off. Same applies to BBC in Rothesay - <u>if</u> in Rothesay we drop the hook and raise the finger to BBC and their rip-off charges.

cant agree more. We went into ELT on friday night. We were going to go across to Gelnan or Buck's Bay - but the forecast was not conducive - and there was still a bit of swell knowcking around.

Got into ELT and tied up 3 out at 23.00 and were 'knocked up' at 08.30 saturday morning. Was not best pleased. £19.00 thank you very much. We left soon after! No water. No 'leccy, nothing.

My father said that recently one of his friends had gone in for a 'short stay' to collect a sail from the sailmaker. Approached for money - told 'em to stuff it. No anchoring facilities therefore he had to tie up. Stood his ground and paid nothing.

I will try that next time in - watch this space.

£19 in Tarbert is definitely OTT, but the BBC in Rothesay only charge £5.00 for one of their visitors moorings, which I think is more than reasonable, particlualry when compared (for example) to mooring charges in Tobermory.

That's true about the BBC. One point to note though is that if in Tobermory you raft up to one of their moorings, you only pay (last year anyway) £10. In Rothesay its a fiver for each boat rafted up.
