My father bought a boat in the late 1950 on the thames near a lock, the only thing Irecall is the smell of a tannery,is there a tanney or was there in the London area.Kingston? tHANKS

Yes a tannery and a candle makers . Kingston is a very old town and still pretty much laid out like it was . They still have the market there but its all poncy now .
Hampton court gardens run right down to Kingston so its possible the smell came from there as there is a stables still near the lock . The river has changed alot since the 50's so all the back waters and the like have gone .

Anything else you remember ? Us locals mat be able to pin point the location although im a bit young :D

no its all very feint, the only thing thats definate was the Tannery and the River Thames and it was near London.Father bought this 15 foot lugger called Dora.We had a test run in a slipper launch with wicker chairs and a drinks cabinat......maybe my life would have been taken a different turn if he had decided on that!!

The tannery was on the Bishop's Hall site (west of Thames Street). It burned down in 1963.

Kingston at one time also had a brewery, called Hodgsons. It was taken over by Courage.
