TAMD63P Heat exchanger backflush

Hi All,

I'm getting overheating on one of my TAMD63P's at high revs so am looking to backflush with RydLime.

My basic thoughts were 12v pump sucking from a bucket of Rydlime solution, and flushing back towards the raw water side so as not to push any debris forwards.

I'm a little unsure about what/where I need to disconnect to get the Rydlime solution into the heat exchanger system.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a 'How To' ? I have done some searching and can't find much info on the TAMD63.
 
Hi Andy , 63 starboard one not easy to get at , port ok . You need a 2 inch fitting each end , attach at gear cooler pipe and then remove rubber pipe at sea water pump to return to bucket ,
Sadly in past jobs I’ve found the intercoolers that bad they need stripping and rod tubes .
Has this shown onsurvey ?

Thankyou for that, luckily it's the port engine!

Yes it was the only thing that showed up on the survey so I'm very pleased.
 
Rydlyme will remove all the calcification and crustaceans plus a few other things extremely effectively. You won't need to remove them afterwards unless there are bits of impeller jammed in!

I removed the exhaust elbow feed pipe (highest point!) and ran water out of exit pipe from the raw water pump into the bilge, and picked it up with a 12v pump from the bilge. Once finished, ran the old rydlyme into the strainer to get rid of it.

Run your pump for around 3 hours at a good strength and it will remove every spec of limescale! You can also run it in the antifreeze system to flush that out, you might be surprised what comes out...
 
Here is how we/I do it:
Rydlyme comes in 20 litre cans.

You should use say 10 litres at a time.

Get a large plastic box capacity say 30 to 40 litres that will fit between the engines.

Remove impeller from pump and replace cover plate

Get a 12 volt Sureflo type diaphragm pump suck Rydlyme from box and pump to inlet hose for seawater impeller pump .

Run return after gear box cooler to plastic box of Rydlyme and circulate through for an hour or so .

Rydlyme foams up severely when fresh and later practically no foam.

When Rydlyme is fresh it is black when it is spent it is clear.

I would run two lots of 10 litres through each engine. First one then a fresh batch.

Have plenty of rags to hand.

You will need to think about hoses and adaptors for sizes of tube etc.
 
Thankyou all, excellent instructions, I'll take a look tomorrow and see if it is clear to me where the inlet and outlet points will be.
