A friend has a Princess 410 with twin Volvo TAMD63P's.

The starboard dipstick tube on the starboard engine (i.e. on the blind inaccessible side) is leaking when the engine is running. He thinks it's the tube itself rather than the fitting into the side of the sump.

Does the tube just slide out? Or does the hex nut into the side of the sump have to be unscrewed first?

The tube is 27, 43 in the exploded view here https://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7740790-22-489.aspx

On the stbd side of the stbd engine there's no dipstick, just the tube.

Yes you're correct, it is the source of the oil leak.

The dipstick tube on the blind side is hard to access and see, but with a mirror he has seen oil spurting out of the side of the tube when the engine is running.
So he wants to remove the tube to repair it.

So does anyone know how it comes out?

It comes out by jacking the engine up or taking it out the boat , drop the sump off and undo the nut on the outside, the tube then comes out from , wait for it inside the sump.

I remember BW doing a repair before he bought it, I advised he had an engine survey prior to buying but he used a surveyor I know instead .

EEK!
Thanks Paul, not what we wanted to hear but at least we know not to try and just pull it out.

It's the starboard engine, he thinks the tube got damaged whilst sorting out a recent starter motor problem, so I'm not sure it's related to an earlier repair.

Doesn't sound easy to fix... he may be in touch with you directly!

Jeez NR - just checked the price for my engine.......

£402+vat for dipstick tube!!!!!!!!!!!

At least I can replace mine without removing the engine.

Anyway you can repair it in situ? Sleeve? Spot weld?

Removing an engine to replace the dipstick tube seems just utterly daft....

I suppose you can at least repaint that side of the engine bay!

He asked me to look at starter but I was too busy, sounds like someone dropped the starter on it!! One problem leads to another .
Sounds like the tube has snapped out the centre which will mean either lifting the engine or taking off the coolers to gain access over the top, either way not easy job.

If you can get your arm down there a small circular pipe slice could easily be used to carefully cut through it without creating any swarf, you can then easily cap or plug it. I do now how tight it is, on my F43 even the impeller on the starboard side is a PIA. Otherwise a sleeve and clip, or perhaps some heat shrink might do the trick. Or even a long rod that fits snugly inside with some sealant? Best of luck anyway, I will now take greater care when manoeuvring close to my dipsticks!
