Well,
I appear to be getting there by the 'death of a thousand cuts'. Took the boat out today to test out rebuilt injection pump to starboard engine. Boat runs fine, easily starting (both port and starboard), running smoothly, with normal temps and oil pressure. Did not run her flat out but took her up to 3000 rpm, with plenty to come, should max out around 3,800 rpm. Some smoke during run & a dirty transom on return to port, 1650 hours on engines, Am I being paranoid or should I get the injectors overhauled, several sites on the net say that it is an easy job to remove and refit the injectors post overhaul, or do you know different?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Did you dial-time the injection pump when you refitted it?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi guys,
Thanks for your responses, pump was serviced and refitted by the local Volvo approved agent, so I am assuming that they will have retimed the pump?, engine starts and runs easily. Number of hours run by engines is 1660, which averages to just over 80 hours per year from new. I thought removing the injectors can't be that difficult, but on researching the matter it would appear with VP you require a special tool to avoid damage to the injector collar, no other engine manufacturer requires this of course!. I do not know the wisdom of attempting this job oneself, but when people start mentioning 'special tools' I become decidely nervous. Bit of a shame as I had identified a company who will ultrasonically clean and inspect all 12 injectors for about £200

Just received the bill for rebuilding the pump, refitting etc, came to 851 euros (£750) approximately, which was a relief as a lot of local soothsayers had told me to expect a bill in the thousands.

I think my next step will be to get a quote from the local Volvo agent and see how frightening that is, but as ever always willing to listen to sensible advice from others

I have the AQAD41A's

Mine was really smoky last year, even after a service and much peripheral work. I needed something else done and our local engineer immediately noticed the injectors needed doing.

What a difference it made! Yes they are still smoky, but no one calls the fire brigade when I start the engines on a cold day now. This series of engines - particularly the A's are always going to be smoky. The B's were a bit better. I compared them once with a Targa 33 I was moored next to in Padstow that had the B's in. It was a lot less smoky than mine but still some. If all is running smoothly I wouldn't worry about it.
