Hi forumites,

Some while ago I posted about starting problems on one of the TAMD41bs on our Corniche. The problem remained elusive all summer despite the attentions of well regarded local engineers.

However we have now seemed to have resolved the issue and I thought it might be helpful to share it with yourselves.

To recap we had the port engine taking alot of cranking to start, but when running was fine and delivered full revs. Problems seemed to alleviated by keeping the port tank full or by switching over to the SB tank.

After much head scratching and a new lift pump later the problem was found to be a mix of diesel bug comtamination and swarf (from eberspacher installation) clogging the solenoid valve on the tank. We also found alot of contamination in the primary filter.

It seems simple in hindsight but at the time dificult to diagnose as the engine was fine when running seeming to rule out a fuel starvation issue and would start fine if the tank is full. My conclusion is that when running the lift pump is able to drag enough fuel through but creates a vacuum in the supply side that prevents restarting- a full tank allows gravity to help prime the system

We are just now left with the problem of the sludge left in the tank that is virtually impossible to access so we will treat with extra Star-tron and regular filter changes next year
