I have serviced the two engines in my Birchwood. Both the engines had all fuel, oil, air, filters replaced. Also the flexible fuel pipes were replaced but not with swaged connection ends. I had to use pipe tails banjo fittings and jubilees clips, as I couldn't find a supplier of the swaged end ones. The port side one starts and runs fine. The starboard one takes ages to start and when I bring it down to tickover, 750rpm, it runs for a while and then starts to 'hunt' slightly then stop with a 'shudder'. It will rev up ok.There is no serious ammount of smoke. The engine run meter shows 260hrs, which I believe is genuine. I cannot see any diesel leaks on the system. I've checked the tightness of the unions, jubilee clips and fuel filters.

Q. Would air leaks cause this?
Q. Would a faulty lift pump cause this?
Q. Would a faulty stop solenoid cause this?
Q. Would fuel pump governer problem cause this?
Q. Would a leaking injector cause this?

Any suggestions will be appeiciated.Thanks

assuming it all worked OK before the service, I think you have got an air leak in your new fuel pipes, especially considering the other engine runs fine.

Give a TAMD41 fuel and air and it will keep running. On the basis that it was fine before the service and only a problem since, I would say you are getting air in the fuel system somewhere. Check all connections and make sure filters are correctly seated and tightened. You did make sure you removed the old fuel filter O ring before putting a new one on didn't you?

Air Leaks

Yes both engines ran fine before servicing. My own gut feeling was an air leak in the fuel line/filter. I'm going down to have a session on the boat tomorrow, with a list of possible things to checkout. I'll be in touch. Thanks all.

When you start to check stuff, wiping a finger around all the joints may produce a niff of diesel. If the engine has been run after you did service then any diesel spills should have evaporated because of engine heat, anything present now will be new.If air is getting in somewhere then good chance that after standing for a week fuel may have weeped out of the same place.
Re those "O" rings on fuel filters,it is very easy to forget,in panic to get stinky job over and done with,to dig out old seal,if it has remained out of sight in filter casting groove.

Been there done that.....Twice.

Found it!!!!

Yippee!! Found it. On my way to the mooring I called in at the hydraulic stockist, where I bought the hose tail/banjo fittings, and bought a dozen new copper washers. The original banjo fittings, from the swaged flexible pipes, had thin alloy washers, which I'd refitted to the new hose tail/banjo fittings. The first one I checked this morning, the fuel return pipe from the injector pump, had a cracked alloy washer on it! I changed all the, Volvo Penta , alloy washers and the engine ran like a dream.Tickover rock solid on 700rpm, even when dropping quickly down from full revs or on start up.

Thanks to everyone who gave their time and wisdom to the problem.
