TAMD41b crankcase breather problem

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced problems on a Volvo TAMD41b (or similar) where the engine breather rapidly clogs with oil

It seems to be mainly the Port engine, but both engines have about 950 hours on them and perform well, starting and running sweetly. This seems to have started quite recently. I have changed the filter twice recently at at c£40 a time it's pretty expensive!

Oil level is halfway on the dipstick.

When under load at say 3500 rpm do you get smoke out of the breather filters holes? if so you have a compression problem, you will have either piston or piston ring problems requiring a stripdown of the engine and new piston or pistons and liners, saying that you may have a blocked return hose that goes back to the sump and thats causing a build up of oil in the filter.

I have also had same engine with a failed turbo shaft pour smoke from the breather filter as the exhaust gases were building up in the inlet side of the engine.

Paul............sorry for thread creep, what is the "normal" oil pressure on the AD41B at 2-3000 rpm

Also (and am embarrassed to ask).............where are the pencil anodes located?)

Thanks Paul,

I have not looked in the bay at speed and load. Will try next week-end. The return hose is a good idea though, I was wondering if there could be a problem with oil returning to the sump causing it to pool under the breather, especially when bow up on the plane.
