My starboard engine has started leaking/blowing oil out at high revs' (2,700 rpm +). I can't work out where it's coming from. Crank case pressure would seem the obvious cause but there's no obvious pressure at the oil filler cap and the crank case breather has no sign of significant oil leakage.

There's not huge amounts and it seems to be sprayed about the engine room floor as though under pressure or possibly spinning off rotating machinery. There is no oil on the underside of the engine room covers so it seems to all be going sideways/downwards. It could be coming from somewhere behind the aftercooler but I'm not aware of any oil pipes in that area.

Has anybody any experience of this? Is there any common known problem of this nature with this engine? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

John.

Hi there is a pressure relief valve behind the aftercooler on the crankcase breather housing when did you last change the crankcase breathers?

Breather canisters were replaced just over 12 months ago with Volvo genuine parts. The engines have not done considerable hours since then. Thanks' for the info' regards the relief valve, I'll try and gat access/sight of it.

Long shot here. Had a leak from a perished/cracked dipstick o-ring on a 41p at one stage. As far as I remember there was no obvious place the oil was leaking and that turned out to be it.

at high rev it is either faulty relief valve, or from oil sensor itself (if loose). The other place to look for is the oil cooler - (not the cooler itself but the hoses)

I had the same - o ring was missing, threw out a lot of oil at max revs. Seemed fine when cruising normally.

Thanks' for the replies to date. Dipstick and oil cooler are on the opposite side of the engine from where the problem appears to be, but I will definitely check them. Pressure relief valve sounds possible, I think I will replace it and see if it helps.

Thanks' again,

John.

There is a small hole in the bottom of the aftercooler casing, just behind the drain plug. If oil is passing the turbo shaft seal it will be blowen out of here under high pressure.
