White smoke says to me it is fuel related somehow
I think I would start wth removing that stop solenoid as suggested earlier, check it and the hole it came from for evidence of swarf, bench test it on a battery, then fit it back in, then stick a 5 litre can of fuel on top of the engine bypassing everything incl the lift pump.
Bosch VE inj pump has an internal vane fuel pump that maintains pump presssure at approx 4 bar so it will run just fine with no external lift pump, many cars running the same inj pump have no extra lift pump.
Reconfirm there is a strong flow of fuel from the injector pipes with the new fuel supply.
Also worth checking the fuel return banjo as it has a pressure limiter/restrictor in it to keep the inj pumps internal pressure up, not seen one fail but have to assume no pressure = no go from the inj pump itself?
I believe the inj pumps are obselete from VP, and some internal parts are NLA.
