Hi
I have been looking at a couple of boats circa 2001-2003 which have the above engines, was wondering what the watch outs are on them, also are they generally good Volvo engines. Engine hours on both boats are under 800, both have some service history although more current (not much for first 10 years of life). Any advice would be welcome.

General consensus is that they are good. I have 73Ps in mine, and they work great but are not as well regarded as the 74/75s.

It's worth noting that engine choice is not everything. We bought ours because we liked the whole package - yes, I would have chosen something else if I'd had free choice, but then we are not talking about buying a new boat and being able to specify everything we want. With my boat, only 9 were ever built, 3 at least with the 73 engines - so limited options.

We had a 2001 Sealine T47 with 74Ps. We kept her for several years and cruised extensively around the UK, West France and the Baltic. We only had one semi significant problem which was a lack of revs on one engine. This turned out to be a problem with the diaphragm switch to the ECM. These can be affected by condensation in the tube from the manifold causing rusting in the switch. The switch fails to operate and the ECM doesn`t cut the turbo in. I think that`s a correct lay man`s description but someone will be along soon to put me right if it isn`t. It was really only a problem because the Volvo engineers in Denmark weren`t familiar with the engine and investigated all sorts of possibilities before advice from UK sorted it out in short order. Otherwise a great engine.
