I have previously asked about these engines - TAMD61A - (about five years ago) and the responses I got then indicated that they are un-stressed lumps that will probably go on forever.

The data I can find on t'internet indicates that they are a tad thirsty though (60 lph at full chat which would equate to 120 lph for a pair) so the question is does anyone have any experience of them and what sort of fuel consumption could be expected at low (displacement) speed and cruising (planing) speeds (planing flybridge circa 39 feet)?

Is it crazy to think about buying big engines when fuel prices are only ever going to keep going up?

Thanks in advance.

Great engines I have had boats with 61s in and now 62s, same engine but 340hp.

The very early 61 suffered from valve failure but by about 1988 it was sorted.

The heat exchangers and gearbox oil coolers can block up causing slight overheat, the early exhaust elbows corroded and fell off causing a lot of smoke damage to engine rooms.

In my last princess 388 with 61s fuel was above 1mpg at cruise, stayed pretty much 1.1/1.2 mpg average kept under 2400rpm which gave 22/24 knots over ground depending on the tide.

However if you have a boat eg trader 41 or heavy carver 38 type boat then fuel burn will be greater.

A great boat to go for with vp61s in a fairline 36 sedan/turbo 36.

The 62s I have burn cleaner and give very good acceleration from rest, though top end in my 410 is about the same as the 388 was.

My Princess 410 for sale.

306 hp

Had a Broom 37 with TAMD 61's, so semi planing hull.
Cruised beautifully at 18/20 knots when consumption was a tad under 1 mpg. Never varied much.
