TAMD 41b Leak From Around Injector

I seem to have a wee bit of oil pooled around one of my injectors when the boats had a good run. I can’t for the life of me work out where it’s coming from any ideas? Due to it being around the injector it would indicate its coming from there but surely only diesel can come from it?

Definitely no blow by on the engine or anything like that and otherwise engine seems to be fine.
 
Long shot and I’m sure someone with more expertise will be along shortly; could it be coming from the oil filler cap if the seal is perished? Another idea but probably unlikely to make its way towards the injector - we had oil leak from the dip stick in the past due to a cracked o-ring. There was a surprising amount of oil leaking before replacing the o-ring.

It doesn’t appear to be - it’s the second injector in from the rear of the engine the oil seems to be coming from. I padded the area out with some taupe paper to try and get an idea but even that seems to indicate it’s coming from around the injector.

Someone has suggested I try and use some talc to see exactly where it’s coming from which I’ll try when the weather improves and I can get the boat out for a run.
 
Spray a bit of soapy water around the injector. See if you get bubbles. Could be a bit of blow by if the injector is not seated in the sleeve correctly or the yoke has loosened off? You might hear “chuffing” from around the injector too. Don’t be tempted to just tighten up the clamp down yoke. They are a specific torque.

I’ve tried that already, but it seems I can run the engine as long as I want on tick over or with a few rev’s and it doesn’t leak. When I tried the soapy water there wasn’t any indication at all. It only seems to leak when under load at cruising speed and I don’t think it’s safe to be in the engine bay at cruising speed :p

But from you’re reply, can I take it that in theory it’s feasable for some oil to be in that area?
 
It’s the only way for oily residue to get there if it’s injector related I would imagine however, oil could track from else where in small enough amounts to not notice the route but pool around the injector. Talc might well help identify a route.

I had this on my own 41b’s, it turned out to be coming from the rocker box gasket and only as you describe when the engine is at running temp.
A relatively painless job to replace if this is the culprit.

On mine (41p) just above the second injector from the rear is the rubber connector to the breather pipe that connects the rocker cover to the air inlet. Same on yours? Could this be the source?

A mate of mine suggested this too but I just can’t see any evidence of this. Hopefully the talc will highlights if this is the case :)

Hmm, I’m not sure, I can’t say I’ve noticed that before. Can’t see it on a closer picture.

Think I’ll have to try the talcum powder route as that will definitely show if it is coming from there I guess.

I had something similar last year, turned out to be a cracked fuel line! happened on a real calm day too! Strange thing was, when the engine was running, no fuel could be seen. I had the leak off lines changed as the mechaninc thought it was them as they looked semi tired.
It didnt do the trick. So what I did was take the boat out with my cover open and video the engine going through the rev range under load. (perhaps a good idea) I did this on my own which was a pain in the hoop to drive and watch the engine at the same time but it did the trick. I found the problem, got the missus and back out to dive around the engines as they went through the range. As you can see from the video, very little fuel is coming out while pottering out, but when the throttle is hit and the boost comes on, its a whole different story.
The leak may have started like this (your situation) and over time, vibrated its way to what you see now.
So perhaps having a mate and getting around the running engine, may show you the issue.

Thanks for this and certainly interesting however mines definitely oil and not diesel. It’s just a case of where it’s coming from. I will try the talcum powder method when I next get chance to give her a run ��
