Talurit splicing

Thanks for your reply. I have saved your recommended web address to my 'favourites'. I am looking for the potential for making up the standing rigging on my 28 footer.
 
used to be standard way of terminating stanndding rigging but has a limitation on wire size due to difficulty in bending wire over 5mm round tight radius of the thimble and 5mm used to be the max size available which may be too small a a wire size little small for your 28footer.. Not sure anyone does talurite on 6mm wire and over - considerably cheaper than swaging - my rigging is 6mm talurite ends and I will have that again if I can get anyone to do it.
 
My rigging is 8mm galvanised wire, talurit spliced, and I think it is 19 years old, and still looks good.
I remember that it was quite hard to get a neat splice in wire this thick. and if you do not leave a stub of the wire sticking out of the spice, it tends to look a bit banana shaped.
I have not had a moments worry about it .
 
It is certainly possible to talurit splice up to 6mm. My tool has only heads for up to 4mm but I could buy an alternative head to allow me to do 6mm.

The heads are quite expensive and as has been stated it is quite difficult to bend the wire around a hard eye.(even 5mm guardrail wire)

Talurit make very good splices and come in many sizes up to 48mm dia.
The limit is set by the machines and heads that any one firm possesses.
The hydraulic presses are pretty expensive.
If you want bigger diameters than 6/7mm check out crane and lift firms.
This is Talurit's main market.
Also they make many different thimble shapes and sizes but again, a small rigging firm will not have a complete selection because of the cost.
 
I had all my rigging made by Jimmy Green Marine.... I measured the length of the existing stays, and then gave them the details and the relevant talurit eyes I required. I saved myself about £250 (total cost £150 for a 19') this was as supposed to getting the riggers to do it. They made everything spot on and was simple to install myself. I would thoroughly reccommend them to anyone else. On their website is a quote facility... fill in what you want and they will give you a price for the lot.
 
stephenh is spot on correct. The size is only limited by the machine you have to squish it.

Fishing boats use 20-30mm, sometimes bigger, stuff all the time.
 
I have made up rigging for 2 boats using the yard Talurit machine. The first boat was a 19 footer with 6mm SS wire rig. Dead easy, no problems and everything is fine - she is still sailing round quite happily in new ownership 5 years on.

Did the same 18 months ago for my Eventide 26 in 8mm SS wire - what a contrast! 8mm is was vastly more difficult to handle: getting it tight round the thimbles and keeping it there until I could get it to the press was a battle I would not willingly do again! The 19 footer was less than a days work. The bigger boat was 2 days hard labour..... or maybe I am just getting older! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

However the end result of both exercises is fine.

I did read soemwhere that Talurits are the weakest form of wire splice, Norseman type being stronger and swaging being the best. However as someone points out, industrial applications always seem to use talurit splices, so they can't be too bad.

If DIYing, it is essential to make sure the joint is fully compressed before releasing it - I have seen badly made Talurits pull out. Get an experienced operative to show you before you start.

I where the guy gives it a second press to make sure ! It causes a hairline crack or weak point in the talurit ...

It is supposed to be done in one single full press.

So they tell me !!
