I am investigating sending teenage son (18) on tall ship in Canaries over Xmas. I discovered that are discounting the cost while visiting EC yesterday. In my surfing I found this video which sealed the deal for my son!

Done it, and for the purposes you describe, it's a lorra fun. They all discount, all the time - no one pays list (except mugsy me!)

Very well set up so dad's don't have to worry about injury to heirs etc. They have all the gear, so no need to go looking like Michelin man.

Only caveat: if there's little wind...these tubs need a lot of puff to do anything exciting, then the crew are set to clean and clean...

The Stavros will also be doing a few voyages for youngsters (16 - 24) from Barbados this winter - only slight hassle is they are outside skool holidays (although I think one is probably at half term?).

The Schedule is at http://www.tallships.org/document.asp?cat=539&doc=6597

Have a look also at the Message board at http://www.tallships.org/messages.asp?cat=546
It is a good place for asking questions about voyages - or perhaps finding your answers already, as somebody else has already asked!

Tall ship sailing is good fun for sure - very different to 'conventional' fore-and-aft sailing. I was very skeptical and had all the stereo-type opinions about square rig before I ever went on a square rigged vessel - and once I had been sailing on the Stavros, I realised that there is an awful lot going for sailing with square sails. I would heartily commend it to all Forumites.

PS - Re that Youtube video that Tudor Doc 'found', I met most of the crew before they set off from here early last year bound for (I think) Bermuda and the Azores - a mad bunch for sure! Nobody in the video had to do any acting.....
One crew member had arrived in Barbados minus her rucksack - and it didnt turn up the next day either..... I took her on a tour around town to purchase essential supplies, and as the deadline for returning to the ship loomed larger, she was still trying to decide on colours of shoes (or summat so, I was getting worried about the bollocking we would get from the Captain)...... we had to leg it, and got back to the ship just as they were casting off the lines (I think the gangway had already been taken up) - so the shopping crew had to literally do a pierhead jump.....

What a lovely present!

Be sure to show him this video

[/ QUOTE ]We have a rule to never ever laugh at someone who suffering like that guy. You can lose friends very easily....

Just realised that sounds pompous.

Sod it, I still don't like laughing at people suffering from mal de mer...

That video has been a far better advert for tall ship sailing than any of the official promotional stuff! Be warned - tall ship sailing is seriously addictive and can be life changing (Well, was for me anyway as I met husband when we were both volunteers on Price William in the glamorous location of Portsmouth harbour!)

I did my first tall ship trip in the Canaries and was totally hooked. I don't know anyone who hasn't enjoyed a voyage including one girl in my watch who threw up continuously for 14 days and evetually had to be sedated! She was given the option to leave half way through but decided she was having too much fun!!

[/ QUOTE ] I think we are referring to different videos. The one I was making reference to didn't have a tall ship in it. It was a group of teenagers on a 'fishing boat'. The video of the tall ship and singing is a hoot, and I don't see any sign of anybody laughing at anyone being sick in it...
