...as we were, I have a tale about the Queen Anne's Battery, Plymouth (MDL) car parking charges.
One day last week I had an appointment to join a yacht there for a sail due to last about 14 or 15 hours. Upon arrival at the entrance a barrier automatically opened and let me in at noon. At about 0230 next morning I pulled up at the barrier which could only be opened on presentation of £10 into a slot. There did not appear to be a list of charges when entering the marina (which I will not do again), although I could have missed one in my haste to get under the barrier to get in.
Is £10 too much for less than 15 hours parking, or are we helping to pay for the hightech computerised barrier which reads your number plate in and out and calculates how much to pay?

We keep our boat at Town Quay, Southampton.
The deal was that the berth holder was given a free parking permit whilst guest's cars payed £2 per day in advance so long as they displayed a notice issued at the marina office.
Suddenly and without negotiation, the facility for guest's cars has been withdrawn which means that their cars will cost £10 for each day (24 hrs). So, a week long trip will cost an extra £70 ( might cost £140 if you have (say) 5 guests who come in two cars).
I'm currently looking for a public car park which could be used and then ferry crew from there to the boat, but so far the costs are the same or even more.
My paranoya tells me that this is something to do with a wish to fill in the marina & use the land for property development as has been a constant rumour.

Park in town, it`s a lot cheaper only £9 per day, Plus when you return at 0230 you may find lack of wheels or even burnt to a crisp in some isolated lane, But at least you will save a pound.
There is a list of charges as you enter, a bit small I must say, only 6 foot by 3.
Yes it does pay for the entry system, CCTV and the night watchman who looks after your car and many others.
I have been a visitor to QAB for many years and I can sleep well in my bunk knowing my vehicle is safe and well.

I have parked in QAB on a number of occasions - always arriving and leaving by day. The exit barrier has always risen without payment up till now. Am I in for a shock next time?

During my recent wet and windy battles round the West Country I have come across two good car parking deals. 1) Dart Haven (Yes! A good deel in Dartmouth): park in public pay and display park for as many days as you like. The meter does not recognised periods over 24 hours so a maximum charge of £3 applies. 2) Plymouth Yacht Haven, home of the superb Plymouth Classic Boat Festival which I judged last weekend. Here you can park for free in the nearby visitors car park or on-street not too far away.

So, pay in excess of £3000 for a berth and pay for parking and pay for water (Yarmouth I believe) and pay for electricity and pay for and pay for.............

yes, rip off solent I would say.

ah well.......

Sorry I just don't see why you all let them keep charging through the nose.

Having been taxed to buggery by the Government and now considered a 'soft-touch' by the marinas, I can no longer afford a car of any value and so the idea of a valid insurance claim due to the fact that the Police no longer stop thuggery and vandalism looks pretty appealing.

As far as inconvenience of not being able to use the car is concerned, if the car survives the middle of town, I'll probably end up spending that time stuck on a motorway - so no win.
