hi chaps, me and a few buddies are planning to sail from port talbot to skomer island, staying a night or two in tents on the island, and then sailing across the bristol channel from skomer to bude. any tips/ideas?
Sounds like a great trip but have you ever sailed into Bude, if not take some good local advice and pass Barrel Rock very close to make sure you don't end up on the beach. This is only a fair weather stop and is not good with any sort of sea running.
It's managed by a wildlife trust. The warden and his assistants keep a very close eye on the island and its visitors. I'd be very surprised if you managed to land and camp without running into trouble. None of the Pembrokeshire islands are likely to be any good for camping.
If you're considering visiting and staying at places like Bude you will presumably be in one or more boats you can carry ashore, or at the very least be able to dry out on the top of the tide. With such craft in Pembrokeshire I'd go ashore on one of the small beaches under tall(ish) cliffs and camp there. There are several on both the north and south sides of St Bride's Bay.
