I was told this boating lark was expensive but after the 1800 Euro bill for a passerelle that is only 3years old, that hasn’t been used, I’ve just got the bill for lift out and clean for the survey, it was done six months ago, 460euro to power wash the hull and 160 Euro for anodes that weren’t fitted, I noticed some loose bolts on the Arneson Drives that turned out to be where the anodes should be and I’ve just replaced the anodes myself and 750 Euro for the lift..............when does it end.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
 
Aside from confirming that the only realistic answer is the one lionelz gave you, in your boots I would check the Arneson anodes RELIGIOUSLY.
You could rethink the meaning of "expensive" radically, should you have any corrosion issues on those babies.
 
Its a case of finding reputable yard(s) ,there are some about on the CdA .
Perhaps asking for pics ....most guys do them anyhow on there phones .
Fall back route , time depending is DIY or a combo of both .
Your lift in out + jet off is about right .
It used to cost me about a grand for 3/4 days of blocking off @ Arie d Boom in La Rague .For a 15 M space how ever they use the boat reg cert as a reference to charge .....mines an old Italian , 2001 hull “ written down “ as 13.1 M ....think thats the WL ?
Anyhow it works up to a point ( the cert size ) but in some marinas when we arrive and show them the cert as they request they then have trouble in the aisles when 15 m try’s to spin :)
Fortunately Mrs P tends to point on the plan at a berth with plenty of turning room ....after buying 13 m worth of berth .
Same applies to yards they insist on a copy of the cert .....charge , make a invoice out for 13 M .....then scratch heads when the lift operator can’t drop / fit it in where they thought they were gonna block it off .....it’s ends up with the bigger stuff < 15 M .I always ask when the first lift is ie 8.30 am and book that .By lunch they have a problem when the boat that suppose to fit where my boat is happily sat turn s up !


Thats a bit too far for you to go with dirty sterngear in / April May ? Over to la Rague .

Its the often forgotten 3 rd piece of the CdA package ...the yard + maintenance .Often overlooked .
Sure numero uno is the boat ....you have chosen well .
Next the berth .....I prefer the Cannes area inc Antibes for the Shoreside back up of suppliers .So you already on your back foot in St Jean ...travelling time etc and traffic hassle .
Pegomas @15 easy drive from Cannes , la Nap , la Rague has the CdA , MAN , MTU Twin disc ( inc Arnies ) H Q s
VP HQ is 200 M from a shopping centre next to the Mandelieu airport .
France Helices also 10 mins away .in Cannes Bocca they do ..anode , shafts , Arnesons , cutless etc etc wholesalers....but it’s easy to get a trade account...I have one .
Arie s Boom have an engine shed ...they make up hydraulic pipes there and then .They allow “ white van man “ in too such is the size of the yard .

So eventually, look @ flights to NCE , a hire car , bring a mate and take a few days off work for the annual .
Last annual for me was around €2 K ....1/2 of that on the yard the rest on AF , anodes ( @ trade ) + 72 L of oil + engine consumables .
Then as I say a couple of cheap FGT s for nack all from LVP to NCE late April early May .
A yard + guardian to AF , polish the hull , anodes talking €4.5 K in the CdA .
MAN agent 2876 service ....god knows €3_4 K ?

But apart from the saving ......thats part of your gripe ....it’s mostly the fact it’s all done properly.
ie correct oil etc .

It will get better you are a newby dropping on all the snakes ( snakes n ladders ) ....after hopefully a short while ladders will turn up .....but it takes effort and time from you .

Yes you do. Youre boating in the most expensive boating area in the Med. My annual costs have roughly doubled since I arrived in SoF in 2014 compared to what I was paying in Sardinia. On the upside, if you find the right people they are very competent but they cost. The only options you have to reduce costs is ship parts out of the UK where they are cheaper and do some of the work yourself

At St Jean you can do your own work when your boat is in the yard so that is an option. I have also gone around to Nice for my annual lift and got the guys I use to travel to there. They where more than happy to! I can send you the details for Nice if you are interested. If you choose to go to Beaulieu then the yard is a closed shop and you can’t do any work yourself.

This year Covid killed our plans so I could be down when my boat was lifted. This resulted in lots of simple things that I could have done being done for me and there was a price to pay for that. However it meant that when we arrived a few weeks ago the boat was ready to go and not having to come out of the water so I could start the maintenance. So was the price worth the time on the water , probably yes.

Like many on here I like doing what I can both for interest and the savings!

Good info, thanks, is the yard at Beaulieu owned by Monaco marine ? Have you ever used them ?
 
I am in Mallorca. A lift on a squadron 58 is e1000 lift and hold e500. I can live with that.

What I can’t live with is e500 to spray the hull off and acid the props.

The lift cost ££££ a pressurewasher and unskilled labour does not !
 
Yes I have used Monaco Marine, but not for our power boat. Monaco Marine at Beaulieu are more interested in larger boats +20m. So getting into the yard can be problematic. You can deal direct with them our via an agent. Prices are pretty much what you have been charged.
 
In port adriano in mallorca I pay 115 euros to lift (not lift and hold) a 25 foot boat, and another 115 euros to pressure wash.

That sounds quite reasonable compared to the costs above...

I didn’t realise they sold to the public, JCS pointed me in their direction when I needed some anodes, I bought 8 anodes for half what I’ve been quoted for 4 replacing on a lift out !

I’m in business and do realise companies need to make profit but 200% mark up on parts and over 200 Euro/ hour for unskilled labour is taking the piss !

Is that all? Those costs don’t even leave a blip on my radar.
 
Yes Monaco Marine have a small trade counter where you can buy bits and pieces. I order all my anodes from Anode Outlet and supplied them for the team to fit. I was going to do all this myself, but as I previously explained Covid killed that plan.

The pressure wash and acid treatment is better value for money than Nice where they wash only. The yard at St Jean will not let you wash your hull or do your own acid wash either.

Having acid washed my drives myself last year, the results from having them done in St Jean was much better than I could achieve so it’s a cost I am happy to bear.

Both JCS and Aquamarine will give you 10% off once they get to know you.
 
Two years ago we where due to get lifted at St Jean and Didier was going to fit a set of new props for us. When I went to start the engines a battery exploded which resulted in acid going everywhere. Didier dropped everything came straight to us and helped me clean everything. He then helped me move the boat to St Jean, we where all a bit shaken as it was quite a bang, swapped the props, got a replacement battery and saw us off. Additional cost to me was zero, less the price of the battery. He is that type of a guy. I have seen him help people in bays when they have a problem and he is just trying to relax with his wife and son.

I’m already using local businesses but they have to provide value for money, it’s a steep learning curve for me as I’m also in the service industry.

I’ve a few small jobs need doing before we go back to the boat, so we’ll see how we get on !
