Taking Pets Abroad

The problem as I see it, is that when you bring your pet back, their passport is checked to ensure it has been completed by a vet and that their vaccinations are up to date. If you were to bring your dog (or cat) back on your own boat, who would do this check as we all know that it is easy to travel to a fro without ever having your own passport checked. By letting you bring your pet back on your own boat it would open the doors to more illegal dog trading. Sorry to be a spoilsport as this was one of the key reasons we had to give up boating so I would really like the loophole to be opened up but I can see why it is not possible.

Hi Hasty Lady, Good to hear from you! Without reading it again (!) I think the problem is that the restrictions are getting far worse - esp for the SE area - with the Dover boats not allowing foot pax to accompany dogs? I'm sure a solution is possible, if only someone really cared! S

Dogs are banned in the port of Ramsgate. I once saw an 'official' try and stop a Police Dog Handler joining some sort of Police activity on/in the inner harbour. He got short thift I'm pleased to say.

My understanding is that it was reinstated. I could be wrong. I will find out.
You are right Tony. It was rescinded.

Change to pet restrictions
Further to Thanet District Council’s decision to remove Byelaw 44 there is a requirement to give notice to the Government of their intentions. In this interim period customers are being permitted to bring their pets to Ramsgate, providing that, the animal has come from a UK port of departure.
Should a customer wish to bring a pet from mainland Europe they make use of the ‘Pet Passport’ scheme. The nearest point of entry for this is via ferry operations at Dover port.
