I would like to adopt a little dog and wondered what the laws are for taking them on the boat to France and the Channel Islands. Can anyone enlighten me.

Thanks in anticipation

Unless the situation has changed recently, it's fine if they stay on the boat, but you can't land them at all in France. You can in the Channel Islands, but not via the harbour/marina.

There would be no problem in landing your dog in France, but it is essential that it has a rabies jab as that's the law in France.

However you won't be able to bring the dog back on your own boat as only approved carriers are allowed to do that, and even then the animal must have a Pet Passport, and be treated for ticks and worms between 24 and 48 hours prior to boarding.

Get a really little one that will fit in a bag, then just carry it off the boat a la Paris Hilton until out of sight of marina, put on beret, onion necklace, diamanté lead (on the dog, obviously) and have a baguette sticking out of your back pocket(s) - then people will not know that you aren't a local.

Upon returning to the marina, remove all aforementioned items, don socks+sandals, shorts, pale legs and rudimentary handkerchief bald-head protector with a knot at each corner and board the boat with dog in bag whilst distracting local boat owners by shouting "ahoy-hoy old bean" across the pontoons.

Return to boat.

In the extreme case of customs boarding, temporarily insert dog into bilge compartment.

Unless you want heaps of hassle, (expense) or are going for a long time, leave the dog at home.
