Lost wind vane off mast head unit cups still working . Anyone know what might have failed? I see you can buy a replacement vane kit but have not yet been up mast to see if any damage other than missing vane. At one time Tacktick had v good support and they would send you a new one against a deposit until the old was returned, meaning one trip up mast. It now appears to have been taken over by Raymarine and the cost of a replacement (08) £110 has now risen to £400. Got an horrible feeling I might end up having to buy a new unit.!

Has this happened to anyone else under the Raymarine banner?

If it was them that bought Autohelm then yes...

I must say I found the support at Tacktick to be very good when I called them a few months ago...

£400 sounds like an awful lot of money just for the mast head unit.

When I google tack tick it goes straight to the Raymarine site and then there is no specific tack tick support , just seems to get bundled in with all the other Raymarine stuff. I can buy the wind vane kit but just trying to determine what I might find when I get to the unit. It's going to mean two trips up the mast unlike under the former regime when I went up with a replacement. It does seem to be the weak link in the whole system ,perhaps I have just been unlucky!

Surely the weak link is the fact that it's necessary to go up the mast at all? My aged "wired" wind transducer just goes on year after year.

Well that's all very well until your masthead unit falls to bits or some seagul nicks it. One day it will fail and then up you will have to go , how else are you going to fix it?

It's the weak link of all masthead units! Wireless and wired!

I am thinking I have been particularly unlucky since most other reported problems seem to involved the cup bearings, which incidentally I had to replace with free of charge upgrade last year.

I will try phoning Raymarine tomorrow, but from goggled reports my expectations are low.

Raymarine

Eventually got to speak to someone. Buy a new one was the advice. 1/10 for dynamic and helpful attitude nothing like the really helpful and enthusiastic people in the early days.

It will be interesting to see how the Tack Tick products develop in the future under the Raymarine Banner.

There's one just been listed on eBay. Private sale but apparently never used apart from testing.

Is that the bent one for power boat use. Not sure it's the same it has an extension on the cup spindle. That model costs a bomb new. Will keep eye on it.

That probably is the one - thought it looked a bit strange, but I've never been up our mast to inspect ours at close range.

I had a problem with my Tack Tick masthead unit.It packed up when it was 2 years and a week from purchase and therefore out of warranty.I had to buy a new masthead unit.Tacktick gave me a price over the phone and confirmed it by E mail as a fixed price. When I came to pay they said they had forgotten the VAT and increased the price by 17.5%.When I got the replacement unit I saw that the design had changed.I then found out from some other people with the same problem that theirs had been replaced free of charge inside the two years.Up to this time they had been responding to E mails and phone calls. When I e mailed them to say I was unhappy that that had increased a 'Fixed price quote" and that it seemed that the head unit had a design fault and was not fit for purpose they stopped answering E mails and phone calls completely.I had paid out for the new unit anyway as they had me by the proverbials.I had bought Tack Tick as they had emphasised at the boat show the reliability of their systems and that was why they are more expensive than others. One lives and learns.

If he is going to have to cough 400 then he may as well go all the way nand buy a new B&G set, just over £800 squids and he can tell raymarine to swivel!

In the early days when the inventor/developer ran the company, customer service was very good but since they sold the concept it has been down hill all the way. Now it's with Raymarine!!?

TackTick

When my masthead unit packed in recently,I spoke to Raymarine who said ii was probably the bearings, send it back and we will replace the bearings.
When it was returned they said old model unable to replace bearings ,would need to buy replacement head at £330.
Not much option, either buy or scrap the system and run cables down the mast.
Much better service from the original supplier.

Replacement wind vane

I have ordered a new wind vane part no TA100 , just hoping there is no damage to the body. If there is ,its either scrap the whole lot or buy a new one at a few pence under £400 . Built in obselesence perhaps.

Sounds like bull , three years ago when it was Tack Tick the cups seized up in light winds. They sent me a replacement bearing pack FOC, fitted DIY no problem.

Of course it's bull, they don't make the bearings - they're just off-the-shelf bearings.
