My almost-new Tack Tick depth sounder is giving a maximum depth reading of 35 meters.

This doesn't seem all that good by comparison with the ST40 on my previous yacht, which read to 140 meters.

I've checked the installation, which is clear of the keel and seems OK. The sounder is accurate to this depth.

Is this performance typical, or should I replace the transducer, a Raymarine T912? Or might something else be to blame? I do find it helpful sometimes to read up to 100 meters.

When I bought my TT kit in 2006 I understood that an Airmar depth transducer was standard.

Airmar was standrad on mine also. Being an East Coast resident I get dizzy if the depth reads more than 10 metres so don't know what maximum it is capable of recording.

Thanks Georgio, maybe I should just live with it then.

Sailing round shallow, muddy, flat-bottomed SE England this would hardly matter, but in many parts of the world the bottom has a knack of rising up sudden and hard. 35 meters sometimes isn't all that reassuringly deep.

PS I think the Raymarine T912 is a rebadged Airmar.

As far as I know all Raymarine transducers are Airmar. I did wonder whether you were shooting through the hull with a transducer in an oil bath as this can affect ultimate range, but this transducer is a thru-hull mounting. Have you cleaned pulled and cleaned the transducer over the comparison period? Is it possible that you need to tweak the sensitivity on the TT unit?

Rob.

P.S. Raymarine claim 80m with this transducer.
