Hi,
I would like to fit a tacho to my Yanmar 2GM20, I have looked at the tinytacs and some VDO units which run off certain alternators. Has anyone done this already? and which contact do you use on the alternator as I will have to check that mine has one.

Durite do a good one and not too expensive. Fitting instructions guided me though it and it works (and I am an 'lectrics numbnut).

Durite can be obtained from an autoelectrics supplier outlet like what my son in law runs. google it for spec

If memory serves it feeds off the alternator D terminal and the unit can be adjusted/calibrated once fitted.

Often the 'W' terminal but may be different on different makes.

It may be possible to make a suitable connection even if the tacho terminal is not fitted

ITYWF however the tacho normally fitted to the GM engines is driven from an electromagnetic sensor which "counts" the flywheel teeth as they pass . There is probably already provision to mount one of these .

The inductive sensor mounts in the top of the bell housing, and the standard alternator doesn't have a 'W' terminal.

What do you calibrate it against?

What do you calibrate it against?

I would calibrate it with my Granddad's old hand held mechanical tacho

but

you could put a dab of white paint on the crankshaft front pulley and count the number of times it goes round in 1 minute

I fitted a Tiny Tach which has a bolt-on sensor on the fuel inlet pipe just upstream of the injector. Very satisfied with it, a lot of different data, simple to install and reliable.

+1 No problem to fit, no calibration, does revs and engine hours and can be set to give time to next service etc. Works on any engine. Brilliant.

Senses pulsing in an injector tube and requires no connection to the engine electrics.

I calibrated against what she would tick over at which was about 800 rpm and also a certain vibration always used to happen to the chartplotter bracket at 1500 RPM with the old Tacho so set the new one to this as and when the plotter shook.

Dead sophisticated me!!!!!

Dont some smart phones have a tacho device? They seem to have everything else..................... "there must be a APP (whatever one of those is) for that"

You might have deduced that I dont really do 'modern' stuff.

Based on the above, I contacted Tiny Tach with a view to fitting to my Yanmar 2GM20, and received a very prompt and helpful reply, to whit I have now ordered one.
All my questions have been replied to by return, and I look forward to fitting it, as I too, am not electrickery savant.....
