Tablets and Antares

I am not sure what happens when this tablet gets wet and dies

I assume I go through this loop again

Indeed you do, but you will have had this installation as a practice run :)

It is possible of course to save the charts to PC (via USB cable) just in case. Also, you won't have to pay for the app again if you dunk the tablet.

the second time around it will be from first principles again

I can't see what's wrong with simple Navionics charts. I downloaded all UK years ago to my then mobile and it probably saved our lives on my friends boat by identifying that we were heading towards calf sound when we should be entering port St Mary on IoM. I now have it on my samsung as well. All for about 12 quid. The data must be the same on all digital charts as vmh or Antares don't do their own surveys.

Could i have a link for the Navionics charts that i can put on two PC's, two Android devices and get free updates for a year please ?

....

The combination of all information sources beats any one, but I have very many times done things with computer navigation that I'd never have considered without.
Yes. Don't get me wrong, there are several places that we would not have gone into without Antares. The point I was making was that the GPS position should not be taken as gospel and when it comes to distances I am not sure what you mean because we frequently have to be accurate to less than 10m - much less sometimes when it comes to passing submerged rocky bits. This is where the Antares charting and transits are your friend.

Antares DOES do its own surveys.

Dylan - my geezerhood is more advanced than yours. I got this lot on to my laptop with little bother. I did have the wit to order a disk as I didn't fancy having my bits and bytes sent by donkey over the internet.

Didn't get out to your pride and joy today. Went climbing up (a bit of) Ben Cruachan. (A very little bit actually - to the dam.) I'm very confident that your boat is OK. We might meet Sunday or Monday given that our lovely vessels are nose to nose.

I might show you my beautiful baroque (but bananas) electronic navigation system - as long as you don't ask me to configure yours.

In Dylans defence, it is much easier to install the charts on a PC, or at least i found it was.

Re the disc version, am i correct in thinking you can only use them with Seaclear ? That was the case when i bought the disc version a few weeks ago. I sent mine back and changed to the download version, which allows a choice of software.

thanks Paul

still struggling this morning with getting the antares stuff onto the tablet

my advice to anyone with money is to just buy a pre-configured device from Raymarine and plug it in

unless you enjoy typing endless streams of gibberish into a range of different forms and devices

this is not nearly as much fun as sailing

Oh come on. It can't be that difficult. Between us, with my half brain and my wife's half brain, we have all the Antares and as many BA Charts as we want, on a tablet working through Memory Map. The full instructions come with the disc from Antares.

still wading through slow moving digits at this end

just saying like

apologies for be such a thicko

There are several different formats on the disk, refer to the web site for details (http://www.antarescharts.co.uk/).
I use them with OpenCPN on a RaspberryPi.

and there is the clue

you have raspeberry - there is a chance that you love this following instructions stuff

it bores me sideways typing nonsense into boxes

for information I am attempting a download onto a tablet

so I have attempted to download to my desktop and to a drop box (all new to me too)

never had an android tablet before so missing a mouse and a keyboard

I have instructions from VMH for making them work with their software

"Dylan

The Antares charts, pull out the overview one. Get the rest of the Antares .KAP files and put them loose into a .zip folder. Give that .zip folder the same name as the chartset

VMH-UK+IRL-2016

Then put that into (android) downloads folder, and import. They will then work in conjunction with the UKHO ones.

Otherwise they will only work separately.

Kind regards,

Steve"

these are the instruction from antares

It is weird being on the other end

I used to get emails from blokes who were struggling with making my own website work

Keep at it Dylan you're more clued up than me. What's wrong with the peastick for depth measurement?

generally you can see the bottom in scotland

but Liung caught me by surprise and I gave it it one hell of a clonk

as an east coaster and playing around the shallows the mud is very forgiving

the rocks are a different challenge
