Tablet as nav tool

Likewise I see nothing wrong with the old Raymarine kit, in fact I prefer the UI of the old to the new latest fancy kit. But that may be lack of familiarity. The problem is that my old kit is now obsolete - so when it dies that’s it, game over. So I’m thinking that with it being well in to it’s mid teens I need to think about the next iteration. I plan to renew when I next take the mast down as that will be the time to fit a new digital radar.

Charts with old fashioned GPS at Navstation were our Plan A and B until 3 years ago (I like retro and don't find navigation difficult with any GPS source available compared to pre GPS days). Since then Navionics on iPad (on chart table mostly and kept plugged into cigar lighter socket) with occasional use in the cockpit on entering harbours.

I can imagine wanting a chart plotter on E Coast of England (although wind farms have added some clear features to help) but in SW England and the Med I personally have no want or need, but do find myself buying fewer paper charts for new cruising areas than I would have before.
