Any manufacturer of veneered tables is going to pitch his product to the volume market, and this ain't going to include boats. It'll be for the domestic market, and the backing of the veneer will be chipboard or MDF. I wouldn't want either of these on my boat, but that's probably because I'm such a crusty old curmudgeon.

By far the largest manufacturer for these tables is apparently based in Italy. The better ones use a heavy density fibre board (like MDF, but heavier), but still would not be my choice. Dont see why they couldnt substitute a piece of marine ply, but would be worried, that I was actually getting marine ply, and that the glue they were using would stand up in the marine environment. They are also a real **** if they get chipped as the lacquer is sprayed on, and it is imposible to do an invisible repair.

Thanks for your replies I was rather hoping that somebody would do a pre cut tabletop veneer but your robbins suggestion may be the way out. for general info a friend of mine keeps his "workmate out on the pontoon and has done for two years so far , the "jaws" of this are "marineMDF" and show no signs of deteriation at all so it is pretty stable and water resistant is it not in the right type? There is a company in germany who does thse table tops, some with a compass rose in the middle, in various sizes. I will try and find out the address for you, saw them at a boat show in Holland.
