2002 T40 DPG Drives

Ah, shit. Sorry to hear this. I don’t know enough about the DPG drives but I’m sure you’ll get some opinions soon.

Any prop damage? Does she engage in gear now?

In the abscence of any visual external forensic evidence of a whack from a submerged object , bearing in mind they supposed to kick up .
I suspect a gear connected to ,or near that weak line has dropped a tooth =. Jammed and the resultant force ripped out what the thing was attached to .

Yeah I reckon something seized in the drive and the torque had to go somewhere ,so ended up splitting the gear case.

Or the UJ could have given up and broke, i would be very surprised if that was done from hitting something at 5 knots.

Luna, that's really unlucky. First stop is definitely your insurers. If they won't play ball then I guess it's a strip down to assess the damage. A job for Volvopaul or Colin Ryan? The fact that we're at the end of the season should be some consolation.

yeah props look ok .. not sure about engaging gear as its so noisy didnt want to do anymore damage .. if thats possible

Yeah it def felt like the boat hit something , thats what i 1st thought but looking at the bottom of drive looks ok.. no damage, just full of water .. so i guess it just blew up

Managed to get her lifted over east cowes this afternoon swiftly, looks like it be stuck here till sorted.. oh and another thing i was on one engine .. had to use bow thruster slighty more than usual as you would expect.. but now thats broken.. motor spins but prop dont, guess its sheared something.. any ideas?

not had much luck today

Bow thrusters usually have a shear pin somewhere, so that might be the cheap fix.

As to the outdrive, wow, that’s not good, I’ve not seen that before on a DPG, you have been incredibly unlucky there.
U/J failure is unlikely, as that’s in the bellows.

Reversing into something (a rock?) could cause that.
Or losing a tooth on the upper gears which as mentioned previously, could cause a jam and the the gear set would have nowhere to go apart from “outwards”.
Either way, the metal exposed looks to be only recently exposed, so more likely a sudden event rather than the case cracking and failing over a period of time.

Hopefully the insurers agree that the damage was caused by the rock that you recently reversed into.

It could well be that the upper gear housing has had a catastrophic failure. I had the same on my last boat but it was a DPH drive. If you’d hit something you’d have prop damage or something of that sort.

I guess it all depends on the history of the drive and servicing intervals by prior owners. The only other thing is you were only doing 5 knots so seems strange that it failed then. Either way a marine engineer will be able to give you the diagnosis you need.

Sorry it’s happened. I hope you can claim it on insurance.
