Hi All,

I'm just going through some blurb from the original brochure of my boat back from 1970

One of the figures quoted is a T.M. figure of 4.7 Tonnes. Can someone tell me what that figure stands for?

There is a separate displacement figure below that in lbs so I take it it's not a weight figure.

Any info would be appreciated

cheers,

Nick

TM Thames Measurement is a volume calc used to calc hold capacity & nothing at all to do with displacement which is actual weight of the ship

Thats great. Thanks for the quick reply.
Well I did wonder since the figure is nothing like the Displacement figure.

Thames Measurement or its use by boatbuilders to quote prices for new building probably was the cause of why british boats remained narrow as opposed to our american cousens who where enjoying greater beam in their sail boats

Hesitate to disagree with wiki wotsit(and risk offending young Sailorman, but isn't Thames measurement the volume available for carriage of cargo EXCLUDING machinery spaces and accommodation spaces and is more correctly expressed in TUNS(SODDING GREAT BIG CASKS)???

See Young Sailormans first post ;)

A Tun is a Beer Barrel measurement:rolleyes:

NO-NO-NO-!!!!!
That's how much Sailorman can drink at a sitting!

Damn! I've been cutting down from 5 Tonnes but I get thirsty in these cold autumnal nights. :D

Hmm best not invite Sailorman onboard for a drink, or i'll be stuck with the baby drinks like VnT

Don't talk to ME about cold autumnal nights----I'm wintering aboard on the Clyde!

I'm getting a curious impression of this fabled Sailorman. :D

He is indeed a strange fellow ----has been known to imbibe the odd bit of single malt 12yo JURA in addition to the odd tun of beer then get excited about flag etiquette. Thinks he 's the only one allowed to fiy the jolly Roger------- and as for SHELLFISH!!!

I CAN SLAG HIM OFF NOW COS AT HIS AGE IT'S PAST HIS BEDTIME!

This TM malarkey has certainly given me an insight into one or two Forum members.

Mostly that some of your drinking habbits are a little concerning. (especially for the one footing the bill. :D )
