Syracusa, Siracusa, Siracuse, Syracuse - by any other name.

Once anchored here in the North West corner of the bay, (8m mud/clay excellent holding once you're dug in - a few people dragged in 23 knot winds on my first day, so they cant have been dug in), the dinghy dock/pontoon is fairly obvious... to the right of the police station looking North.

Up the rusty iron ladder, onto the road, immediate left to the roundabout, 1st left, 10 yards on the right is a Camping shop - "Campeggio" for Camping Gaz. He only had one 907 cannister, but said he could get more with a couple of days notice on weekdays.

Up the rusty iron ladder onto the road, straight across 2 roads to a handy hardware store.

cross the first road, then turn left onto the second road to the plaza/roundabout where Via malta and Corso Umberto meet. 2nd exit along corso Umberto... Spar is on the right. Opposite the Spar is a DHL Service Point, (computers and internet cafe aswell), if you need to get mail home quickly, (but not cheap at 30 euros for the smallest package).

You can also dinghy into the centre of town... turn left down the "canal" by the marina, under 1st bridge, tie up on the left, (or maybe the right??).

Corso Umberto crosses the second bridge and, if you turn left away from town, on the left after the 1st crossroad is the launderette. 3 euros for a small load. 6 euros for a big load. Big driers 1 euro for 6 minutes. Washers take 50c and 1 euro coins only.

There are a few old ruins, some very impressive buildings, but i think the above covers the important stuff.

Hope this helps somebody sometime

Richard

Wonder if you got to Malta Richard (moody 44 Rogue)
I've begun a thread entitled MALTA to see who is visiting and when. Perhaps you could post if you see this (Polly) Dufour 36 C'est Formidable.
We hope to visit a few times during the winter. will you?

Polly,

I arrived yesterday and have got a berth in Grand Harbour Marina but only for two days... so I'm going to be busy this afternoon phoning round the marinas to see if anyone has space - otherwise I'll be anchored in the Med. for the winter!!!

Two more good cheap supermarkets and a Lidl's within 5 to 15 minutes walk from dinghy dock, further along the road past the camping shop. Our camping gaz bottle was refilled the same day.

Excellent place Syracusa, we really enjoyed our stay there in 2006. The old town is a fantastic place. An excellent free and secure anchorage with space for hundrds of boats.
Did you visit Brucoli a few miles North? Well worth a short visit IMO
