Sydney /Hobart
In his report into the 1998 Sydney/Hobart race, the Coroner made specific and far-reaching recommendations to the Australian Yachting Federation.
One such recommendation already in force is that 30% of the crew including the skipper shall have undertaken training within the three years before the start of the race (50% by July 2002), In both theoretical and practical sessions.
Training will include the AYF Safety and Survival Course.
This included *care and maintenance of safety equipment
*Liferafts
*Fire precautions and fire fighting
* Damage control and repair
*Heavy weather crew routines, boat handling
*Man overboard prevention and recovery
* Hypothermia
* Weather forecasting
* Plus a lot more
Of immense interest was jumping into the water fully clothed, including thermals. wet weather gear, sea boots and then trying to get into a life raft. Have YOU ever tried it?
Also trying to right a raft by yourself. Not easy.
Now I realise most of us will have our Yachtmasters, this course however goes a step further and delves into areas like "Duty of Care" Now that could take a whole day to cover.
All a bit scary. I think I'll just get into the bathtub and play with my rubber duckie.
Exam results back in about 2 weeks.
