"Next year, and for several after that, while the smallest is small, we moor on the Thames"

I'm a cheapskate trying to run a boat on an NHS salary. I realise that "cheap" and "Thames" are probably mutually exclusive but am I right? I front £1200 pa in Chichester Harbour for a 27 footer so where in the Thames might be comparable in costs, with the robbery of a waterways licence or whatever it is? Im not fussed over pontoones, shorepower and so forth as inf we are on the Thames SWMBO will play far more often. She might go boating more often too:) If I had my way it would be with8in striking distance, a day or so, of Teddington and tidal waters.

There are bank moorings at Wargrave. Not always popular as they are literally on the soil bank, and you need to dinghy to them from the Wargrave side (no access directly except by a very long walk down the footpath. No facilities, but cheaper than most. Bit pot luck, sometimes there are vacancies, othertimes not.

Can do Teddington in a day, except peak summer weekends.

Try Mill Lane Boatyard in Taplow.

If you don't mind mooring on a pontoon in the river (marina has works dinghy), you will get a mooring for around that figure.

01628 630249 I think.

I used to moor there.

Best of luck.

Just a thought, but before you even think of putting your boat on the Thames, you need to be aware of the Boat Safety Scheme.

This means your boat will have to be surveyed for a checklist. It can be prohibitively expensive for sea boaters to have their boats comply to this scheme if on a budget. The many Thames Boaters here can help with which surveyors are more realistic in their approached than others, and what needs to be changed. It's been a while since I was there, but examples that spring to mind are that your engine cannot leak oil into the bilge, so you need a catch tray underneath, any sea toilets locked off, glass filter inspection bulbs replaced by solid, and all sorts of regulations on hoses etc. Check this out before you make a committment to move.

Send off for the FREE guide. Comes in a nice ring binder thingy all post paid.

BSS is compulsory on almost all inland waterways with the exception of the Norfolk Broards (although comming soon).

Not required on the tidal thames though, but I guess that would defeat the object. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Does not apply to open boats. If you cut the deck and cabin off you would be OK. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Loads of the BSS is common sense (Unlike some examiners!) But there will be some financial implications. Some of it is anal though.

It depends how handy you are? Changing filter bowls and pipes etc is not a major problem, but if you have a gravity fed petrol system you will be in for it big time with replacement tanks and re-plumbing.

River licence is calculated on lengthxbeam. Don't expect much change from 200 quid.

D.

I don't need to send off for anything thanks.

I took my boat off the Thames because of all this crap, and I know exactly how it works

The sooner we have a poll tax protest type revolt the better. The BSS is the biggest pile of bureaucratic dog poo ever invented!
