Swinging moorings Portsmouth

Advice sought about swinging moorings or half tide pontoons near the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.

I am currently paying for the privilege of being at Haslar marina and find it increasingly hard to justify the expense. On the other hand how much of a hassle is it to run out to a swinging mooring and are there quays nearby that you can come alongside to pick up passengers rather than get them all wet in the dinghy at the start of the day?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

An along side pontoon at royal clarence gosport may be a possibility, you could be rafted up though.

Cheaper than a marina berth at haslar.

Quay Lane have cheap pontoon moorings, but very limited access - the channel dries completely. They also do swings.

Also try Gosport Boat Yard - they were dearer than others, but do provide a free (I think) water taxi to and from their moorings.

Another possibility is Hardway Marine, who I think have some tidal moorings available.

As far as pontoons are concerned, there's a public pontoon at Hardway, which is very tidal, and the (members only) Hardway Sailing Club pontoon which is OK for reasonable drafts any time. If you do take a mooring in the area, membership would be worth looking at. It's a very friendly club, with loads of people to give advice or a hand when needed. They also have moorings - if you can wait 10 years!

As far as hassle is concerned, on a nice sunny day, it's no hassle, especially if you can offload to a pontoon before going out to your mooring to put the boat to bed, BUT when it's cold and p*ssing down and you've had a rotten trip back from Cherbourg and it's low tide so everything has to go in the rubber duck 'cos you can't get on a pontoon to unload and the outboard won't start and...

As others have mentioned - Gosport Boatyard have a large number of moorings in Portsmouth Harbour, and operate a Ferry Service from their jetty (near Hardway) to their moorings which means that you don't need to use your own tender. However they have moorings all over the harbour and may not be able to offer you one "near the entrance".

Similarly Hardway Marine, Hardway Sailing Club, Portchester Sailing Club and Wicormarine all have moorings further up the harbour.

If you are not bothered about the "Portsmouth" bit there are several cheaper options available in Chichester and Langstone Harbours.

The inconvenience of being on a Swinging mooring compared to a marina depends a lot on your usage pattern. In effect you have to allow extra time at either end of the trip, and possibly extra space in the car to carry the tender, outboard, and/or oars. For me using a tender would also discourage early starts and late returns for the mooring.

I've just taken a pile mooring on the Beaulieu R. at £2,240 p.a. though it's really for a 53fter and not my 30fter - a case of once one's there one should be able to trade down (Ihope!).

I know that no-one loves a smartarse but the reality of dividing those figures by approximately ten to arrive at what we pay has just taken all the pain out the occasionally wet dingy trips to the mooring!

Haslar allows you to pay for 10 months if you can be away for 2 months allowing them to re-let your berth. We took this option this year,as the boat wan't ready anyway, but will do it again next year as well. So 2 months compulsory cruising to save hundreds. (Cornish Maid at 11.24m would have cost us just on £4000)
