Greetings,

Can anyone suggest where I should start looking for a swinging mooring for a 21ft deep keel yacht, near to Port Solent, please?

My plan is to keep my mobo in Port Solent and use the tender to run out to the yacht when going sailing...

Thanks,

CP

So you would leave your beloved on its own, on route between Ports Solent and the sea? The route used by every Sunsail boat going in and out?

You must must be raving mad!!!!

Yes, she is! She's an 'Ionian Teirotamer', 21ft 6in LOA, built for training Yachtmaster candidates in the Ionian.

Instructors and examiners there were fed up of the clear, deep, water interfering with their 'running aground' exercises, and thus commissioned her (one of three) to suit their purposes. Her keel is only 6in long and 1in wide, which does mean that it lacks structural strength. However, its balsa wood construction allows any bits which break off to float up aongside the boat, to be retained and glued back into place later.

I was looking for a mooring there a little while back. When I contacted Portchester Sailing Club asking about it and asking to use thier slipway to launch my little bilge keeler for a couple of days shakedown cruise in September, I got a very frosty reply saying that;
1. One has to be interviewed for suitability before applying for membership.
2. There are only limited moorings and membership in no way guarantees a mooring.
3. Refusing use of the slipway.
I grew up sailing in Portsmouth harbour but now I'm off to the east coast, they seem a very freindly bunch.

Yes, there is a lack of friendliness in the area... Seems that everyone running a boatyard or marina thinks that demand outstrips supply so much that poor behaviour is excused...

Welcome to the East Coast!

I think I can guarantee that, if you avoid certain Clubs at : Aldeburgh, West Mersea and Burnham, you will have no similar experiences here.

For example, should you wish to launch at Woodbridge, ring Robertson's boatyard to make sure their slip is not occupied, then drop a tenner in the honesty box.
