Swinging mooring Portsmouth harbour

We were on the RNSA moorings up by the warships graveyard just off hardway. Getting out to the mooring needed a mooring taxi, but when on the boat it was great - we often used to go back to our mooring rather than going into a marina elsewhere in the solent - sitting on the boat with a glass of wine while the sun goes down - whilst not the med - was lovely.

My dad had one of those in the 80s. £100 a year i think! No mooring taxi, just my dads avon dinghy. Luxury yachting at its best!

No recent experience, but when I had a mooring in Spider Lake for a short time about thirty years ago, I was broken into twice. The first time was obviously a professional job as they removed the "Dynastart" and all its ancillary equipment from a Volvo MD1B with surgical precision, the second time was probably kids as all they seemed to do was drink some beer. Did not have similar problems after I moved closer to the Hardway.

I am looking at swinging moorings in Portsmouth Harbour , access from Gosport side. Has anyone any experience and or preference between Portchester lake, or off Burrow island ?
Just a moring I would not spend many nights on board there. Dinghy probably from Hardway area . Possible a row as outboard is unreliable.

It might be worth talking to Hardway Sailing Club to see how long the waiting list is.

Definitely, sorry I didn't think of this earlier.

In my time - the late 1980's - Hardway SC was a no go zone, huge waiting list and ' dead man's shoes ' to get a mooring but I've heard all that has changed so well worth enquiring.

They have their own jetty and moorings just off it, having been there on club visits I can say they're a very friendly lot !

I might give them a call. I think it is a fixed membership so you apply and wait till they have a space. We may be a bit. Big for their moorings. Not a bad place for a pint any way

If you apply for membership now, you'll almost certainly get in next spring (one intake a year).

Joining to get a deep water mooring mooring would be a waste of time, you'll wait years, but it's a good place to keep a dinghy, have a pint, a yarn or a meal. It's a good friendly club and I always find someone who'll take a line. Big fin keelers dry out safely alongside the pontoon in soft mud. Well worth joining if you've a mooring in the vicinity as you can take a minimum with you in the dinghy and load up properly. alongside.

You say you don't want to be far from a launching spot, as your outboard is unreliable. I'd suggest that the cost of an outboard is half the cost of a mooring and a reliable outboard could be a lifesaver. Spend the money to get it sorted or ditch it and get a new one. You'll appreciate the confidence a reliable OB gives long after you've recovered from the financial pain of getting it!

On moorings, Gosport Boat Yard are the best and dearest. Quay Lane are cheap and cheerful, but may have a deep water mooring for you - definitely worth a phone call. There's also Wicor Marine, but access is better from Portchester than Gosport. Finally, there's the shower that call themselves Portsmouth Moorings. I had a mooring with them when they had the chandlery at Hardway and by the time I got my club mooring I would have gone anywhere rather than stay with them. I 'd got to the point where I'd drive to Arthur's sooner than spend 50p with them for a bolt.

As we're moving further up the harbour with this thread, there's also Fareham yacht and motor boat club at the top end of harbour. They have some moorings and some long pontoons (recent) but I don't know about waiting lists or max size of boat etc.

I'm on a Portsmouth Moorings berth (go to Percy M See, Lower Quay Chandlery) . I'm actually closer to the shore than the end of the Hardway SC sailing club pontoon, but have access 3.5/4 hours outside of high water. The mooring next to me seems to have been vacant for some months so you might be lucky to get it. Comes with tender storage next to Hardway SC.

Just a thought - I know you said Gosport side but if you are driving I find it takes ages to with all the traffic lights to drive down the road to get you to Gosport. We have been at Wicor for many years and find it very convenient from the A32 or M27 direction. Car parking and tender storage is part of the deal too.

I checked with Wicor recently and found their mooring prices horrifying compared to Chichester Harbour Conservancy ( if interested there beware and check car & tender parking ! ) or my club there, but that was for a lift keeler on a half tide spot, might be a relatively better deal for deep keelers.

We actually live in Gosport, and dispute dire warnings from some on this forum we like it. In fact we live in what was officers accomodation at the ex hospital, 200 yards from the sea! Above flood level. I could walk to Gosport boat yard and bicycle to their pontoon at Hardway. The drive to Wicor could be a pain.

I have had a mooring at Burrow Island for about 14 years. Great position for getting into the yard, fuel pontoon, and quick access to the Solent. Never had any problems with the mooring, and the boatyard staff do keep a watch for issues with the boats. Could'nt imagine going anywhere else.

Thanks That is good to know. I am tending to say if a mooring there is available i will go for it.

until a couple of years ago when we got a club mooring - we had spent 15+ years on gosport boat yard moorings and would recommend them without hesitation - great people to deal with - ferry service spot on and never had a single problem with our boat or carparking in the entire time- as for the comments about gosport and the traffic issues from the A27 never felt ill at ease in gosport and have found traffic to be generally not an issue - worse for us was the traffic around chichester on the A27!
