Swinging mooring or marina?

Seems to me that most marinas offer more shelter than swing moorings, but that the boat has much better ability to face the weather on a swing, so the answer is probably dictated by the relative shelter offered on the swing and the marina in question.

I think the insurance advantage of marinas is probably due to the more regular supervision provided by marinas, whether by staff or other owners - one would hope that a serious problem would be more likely to spotted before the boat went under in a marina where people are passing back and forth all day.

'Damage wise - Ever hear about anyboats breaking free of their marina and ending up on the putty? The same thinking moorings instead?'

Err - yes - there was the one on the Crouch and the one at Cherbourg. No come to think of it, the boats didn't break free, might have been better if they did, it was the marinas that broke free.

The marina itself went /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Ouch!!

Reading this thread it appears as if our marinas are very differant to yours. In our marinas we have a finger down the side of each boat with a pile in between the 2 boats i.e finger - boat - pile - boat - finger and so on. You just walk down the finger and jump on the boat, nice.

We don't tie off along side the finger as such and have floats on the piles to tie to as well as the finger. This way the boat just sits happily in the middle tied off in each 4 corners. No damage issues apart from operators having parking issues and driving into something when parking up. Sadly this is common but I must admit damn funny sometimes.

Our marinas also have a breakwater of some sort to stop wave action.

I'm in a berth in a marina for boats to 10.5mts and it costs 130 quid a month, UK money that is /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif This is in the busy marinas, some can be a little, but not much, less than that.

Used to have a mooring in Portchester Creek just outside Port solent. The damage that resulted from incompetent Port Solent users was frequent. Some used to try and pick up a private mooring, foul it and cut thenselves free but I think that is controlled more by the Marina scheduling boats better now. Poor owner comes home and finds he has no mooring. Safer in the Marina!
