Hi Brian
Many thanks for your info I have just added 2 meters of 10mm chain to the end of the 12mm. I like your choice of boat I missed out on buying 2 contessa's (I only wanted 1) dithered too much.
Regards Keith W

Thanks Keith. I have found it useful to slip a length of old pushbile innertube over the chain to prevent damage to the topsides. I also use a long length of 2" dia reinforced hose which comes back almost to the cleat and pokes over the bow, this also helps to keep the chain away from the topsides. Cheers Brian.

Hope this helps. I have a swinging mooring in the Thames estuary. Quite a testing ground, for apart from it being exposed in virtually any direction , there is wash from PLA tugs, and the numerous freighters that head for Tilbury on the other side of the river.

I have a ships anchor, 1 ton with riser chain leading to a swivel, to which is attached a 22 mm rope with a hard eye the rope then passing thru an inflatable buoy, with a hard plastic eye in the other end. To this I shackle two 16mm nylon warps, again with a hard plastic eye in the loop. the other ends have a large eye to go over the deck cleats, and I cable tie a pick up buoy each one. No chain to the boat.
The nylon gives a bit of stretch. I go over the bow roller and replace the pin. No plastic tubing to avoid chafe. Just check it each time you go out. I use this on my current boat.. about 3 tons, and the previous Sigma 33.
The boat bounces around like hell at times. It's better not to look !! Or think about it in bed at night when a force 8 is blowing. No probs so far...xxxxxx.....these are crossed fingers not kisses!! good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have 12mm chain for my moorings. My boat is 31ft and my anchor chain is 10mm. The size of chain is what you measure as acceptable.
regards.

Peter.

I am now moored in Portland for the first time.

I think that chain is mandatory there.

As I am new to it, I have put the chain round two cleats and put large cable ties through the chain and cleats

Hi
I hope you enjoy your sailing on the south coast. There are boats in portland with nylon bridles It seems its down to due dilligence as to what is acceptable. I have a mooring with Quest under water services, I left a message with them on saturday morning as to what I was going to do, I have just been on the phone to him and he told me that on the bank holiday monday he took the trouble to go out and inspect what I had done, I'm pleased to say he thought it looked a professional job and explained that they use 12mm chain as the moorings are able to take boats of up to 10meters which may be considerably heavier than mine, and a 10mm chain bridle is considered to be adequate. It is 2 meters in lenghth, this is so the shackles are above the waterline when moored so can be inspected every cast off.
Many thanks to all who have replied I now feel happy with the fact that new 10mm chain set nicely in the bow roller with the pin in and 2 good turns round a double cleat is satisfactory.

Many thanks to all who have replied
