They really do 'ave a larf!

Just been pricing a particular leisure fridge:

Hammerkauf (Germany) £597.00

Island Waterworld (USA) £584.00

Sail GB (UK) £1,052.00

Don't tell me it is comparing apples and oranges. 500 quid buys a lot of fruit.

End of last year we were looking at replacing the toilet seats and lids for our RM69's in both loos. Our local chandler's prices are very competative but their supplier for these replacements wasn't. £90 EACH was the quoted price. Went to B & Q and bought 2 for £9.98 EACH.

Is it just the recession or do I get a feeling that people are starting to wise up to rip-off chandlers ?

I'll pay what I think is a good price. After all chandlers have a living to make but if the price is OTT then I'll go elsewhere and probably not return especially if I feel they are trying to rip me off.

A lot depends there was one where I was always willing to pay their price for the things I chose to buy there because the service and advice was excellent.

Always remember the reason the government makes quite so many procurement cock ups is the know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

replaced our rm69 seats and lids for £45.00 each last year and thought that was a rip off! £90 is ridiculous. Am interested though in the B&Q ones - I didn't think they would stock a non domestic type that would fit an RM69 - how were they branded?

If you want to stay in business and volumes are down but costs are up, what else can any business do but hoist the gross margin?

Just wandering around my local supermarket yesterday I drew breath, deeply, at what is happening to food prices - not a nice one to behold. Inflation is on the march....!

Swindleries is dead right.

I needed a cam cleat to fix to the (suitably reinforced) rear deck of a sea kayak to use as a towing point using towing line and shock cord (Three parallell lengths of various length in parallell with an excess length of tow line)

I explained what I needed, the use to which it would be put, the position of use stating frequent immersion in the sea etc.

"This is the one Sir, stainless and it will only cost one limb, your choice".

Muggins spent ages reinforcing the deck and glassing up etc, drilled the deck for the mounting bolts and bolted the thing down using large washers under the deck.

First calmish trip out the damn thing seized up.

Were they interested when I took it back to moan? Is snow green?

The replacement bought elsewhere was fit for purpose but needed differently spaced mounting holes of course. GAAAHHHHH!

On another visit I found flares with six months life for sale

So are people going to-

a) Start letting their boats get tattier.
b) Fitting them out with more and more domestic products- so long s/s, hello chrome.
c) Buy smaller boats they can afford to keep and maintain.
d) Keep builders making bigger and bigger boats, in cheaper and cheaper ways.
e) Ration bog use, and close off secondary/tertiary heads until the climate improves?

Profit

If you can buy it in Germany ( Which is expensive ) for £597.00 they are still making a profit :). All businesses have to make a profit or they disappear leaving lots of angry creditors.

So Hammerkauf buy from their supplier and undoubtedly make a profit so perhaps there is an importer somewhere in the chain who thinks that they should make a profit as well. Could be that your fridge is going through many more hands in the Uk than the one in Germany.

It would pay you to see if you can find someone with a truck on the way back from Germany who would pick one up for you if you paid for it over the phone. Always surprises me how the Companies in the EU always have someone who can speak English. Even found a call centre if FRANCE that did

You may be able to source one in Holland be worth a trip over on the Ferry to get it.

I don't see anywhere near that level of pricing difference between Hammerkauf and SailGB. Which particular fridge were you looking at?

Shipping

Take it you'r looking at the WAECO Fridge. It only weighs 20KG and they ship to the Uk for 15 Euro so would order it. If you use a Credit Card you should be safe.

At only 13.3 euros delivered to UK, buy it from Germany.

Dutch swindleries are quite expensive in my experience.
Germany's generally cheaper, elsewhere on the continent yottie kit is generally more expensive than in the UK.

Exceptions:
- Plastimo & Guy Cotten kit are (way) cheaper in France.
- Yanmar spares are cheaper in Holland and Belgium.

Pricing

The WAECO CR65 is £200 Cheaper in Germany must be the difference in VAT .. Germany 19% .. Uk 20% .. That will be the difference . They buy them from Germany put the markup on then ADD the VAT again ..

But the CR65 prices are around £615 (Hammerkauf) and £859 (SailGB). That's nowhere near the 76% price difference the OP claimed.

And, crucially, the CR65 is only £490 at Seamark Nunn. Swindleries??

I needed to buy a Waeco fridge in a hurry last year, the one that failed is still in my garage at home. The best deal in Europe came from a UK caravan and camping place, and their service was excellent.

Just put the part number into google shopping.
