BBC South is reporting a swimmer killed off Bournemouth yesterday, apparently inside a marked swimming area.

Considering the manic antics seen in and around Poole this was a tragedy just waiting to happen.

How utterly appalling. And how worryingly often this seems to be happening. It was only last year that Kirsty McColl died in a similar incident, whilst trying to shepherd her young children away from a rampant watersporter in a marked swimming zone. Can't remember if it was a speedboat or a jetski. But either way, utterly tragic.

We as yachtsmen and women are responsible for every life aboard our vessel. Why can't someone with one small craft be responsible enough not to endanger the lives of the public?

I see so many speedboats and jetskis within the yellow marker zones it is little wonder that this happens. Tragedy for the man and his family/friends.

Why don't they attach the little yellow buoys together with a big bit of chunky rope? that will stop boats entering the area.

And maybe lose their prop/outdrive in the process, a kind of self imposed fine

Is there any fine or wrist slapping for boats found within the swimming area?

Man arrested over 'speedboat death'

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after a body was found floating in the water near Bournemouth pier.

The body of the 27-year-old man from London was found 300 metres from the pier, in an area restricted to swimmers, at 1800 BST on Sunday.

Dorset Police arrested the man from Poole on suspicion of manslaughter following reports that a swimmer had been struck by a speedboat.

Officers are examining a boat in connection with incident.

From his injuries it was presumed that he had been hit by a boat

The dead man has not yet been named and a post-mortem examination is being carried out on Monday.

A spokeswoman, from Portland coastguard, said: "A body of a man who had been swimming in the water was found in the water by the lifeguard.

"From his injuries it was presumed that he had been hit by a boat, possibly a speedboat, but more than that is just speculation at this time," she said.

A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed that a body had been recovered from the water but would not comment on how the man died.

"Police urgently request that any member of the public who witnessed the incident, especially anyone who videoed or photographed the incident, contact Bournemouth police," he said.

Standing on the Bournemouth promenade today (Tuesday) I watched a speedboat pass from the Poole direction well inside the swimming area. What does it take to teach some people?

We hardly have any police on the streets. They are all in the office filling in politically correct monitoring forms or changing the film in speed cameras!
