I think it's also about the type of drivetrain. We had a Grand Banks 32 with a single Lehman 108 hp shaft drive from 1980 to 1986 & in that time had only one minor incident, an engine overheat mid channel. Quick topup & on our way no problem. Was probably my fault for missing the level check before leaving Cherberg.

Never had a problem after that, just make sure you learn how to do things yourself. Not quite so easy with the higher powered modern diesels I guess.

Although we now have twins in our GB42CL (1987 till now) only had a single failure, fan belt 10m south of Portland Bill. Again no problem, replaced under way.

The real big advantage of singles, certainly on the GB 32, was the long keel with a skeg to the bottom of the rudder. I can remember going over submerged pot lines in the CI which were kept clear by that skeg. So for me it would be the drive train that decided whether a single is a good idea or not. I wouldn't have a single pod or out drive, too complex & vulnerable to catching stuff on the prop.
 
Interesting to see that brochure Perry, the single cabin layout puts me in mind of the Haversen 32, typical Benny TY in that it is actuality 3 or 4 feet longer than the designation suggests.

The new brochure is on Beneteau web site and the boat will be at London boatshow
 
This would be perfect for cruising, as we would still have the convertible saloon when needed for guests.
Don't know why Beneteau don't offer that option on the 34.

They do, certainly on the one at SIBS, the settee was a fold up bed.
 
I understand from Beneteau that it will be priced at about £200,000 on the water

That's just insane, when they price the Antares 30 (which is very very similar) at about £120k. In fact isnt the 34 about that price

In fact, id suggest if you want one go talk to a French dealer and talk in euros. As usual the UK dealers are taking the piss on price and not applying the euro rate advantage

The proportions mean a lot of volume for the given size, as you say the denotation tends to be hull length not LOA. This one has a LOA of 34'1" and a beam of 11' 7" (3.43 mtrs) so a 'fat backside' just like the 34.
 
I couldn't find much on the cabins either so had another look at the 34. I like the concept and saloon but the sleeping quarters just look a bit cramped. I know caravan interiors are out of fashion but they do lend an element of space and can be partitioned off for privacy. I just cant see me falling head over heels with that layout under 40 foot.
 
I was referring to the option of a shower room instead of the bunk berths, or have I misunderstood your post and there is indeed that option available on the 34?

You will probably find that list price is based on last year's exchange rate and the actual price you would pay now would reflect the fall in the value of the euro. The list price for my newly bought Bavaria was the 2015 euro price converted at £1.2/1euro. when I ordered it in May the rate had changed to 1.35 and the price I paid was reduced to reflect in part the current exchange rate as the boat was built to order, not a stock boat. Remember, though that only about 60% of the total price is in euros, the rest - commissioning, dealer margin and VAT is all in £s, so a 10% fall in the value of the euro does not result in a similar fall in the £ list price.
 
Interesting boat, looks good and crams an awful lot of berths in on the bunk cabin option. Be interesting to see what the price comes out at :)

We had a good look at the 34 at SIBS too. Very spacious boat, loved the side door from the helm which means you can actually stand on the side deck and con the boat into a narrow space using the bow and stern thrusters. The settee making up straight into a double bed was excellent. felt comfortable too when sitting on the settee.

Just let down by the poor finishing and fixtures all round the boat

I can understand there might be a fixed commissioning fee nominated in £, but dealer margin and VAT certainly should follow the € value down...... unless the dealer increased his/her margin? Dealer margin and VAT are merely percentages added to any £ figure derived from the € import price.

On Beneteau's website the measurements are given as LOA = 999cm (32' 9"), hull length including platform overhang = 958cm (31' 5") and beam = 353cm (11'7"). Deducting the platform overhang (assuming the drawing on the website is reasonably accurate) it seems the actual hull length is only around 28' 6" with a waterline length around 27'

May not necessarily be cheaper. The UK dealer pays the same as the French dealer so it depends on the willingness of the dealer to get the sale. List prices (like asking prices for used boats) are just an indication, not what you actually pay.
