can anyone tell me what the swift 18 is like for coastal cruising? i would be mostly cruising the norfolk coastline.

I watched one sailing in Conwy yesterday and it was going really well in next to no wind. I wouldn't think it would take any heavy weather but for coastal use in light winds it looks like an excellent little boat.

I haven't seen one sailing on the lake, but there are a few on moorings. Is there a tale there?
The multi chine hull and lifting keel lead me to think that they'll be quite tender. But I haven't any concrete information.
Can anyone disprove my thoughts.

they're pretty good. Years ago you could charter them in the Solent. We gave them a couple of goes, in a range of winds, and they were easy to sail. Any small boat finds going upwind in a bit of a chop a problem. Quite quick off the wind though. The Swift gives you very decent accommodation for an 18ft boat.

Funny that. My bilge keel Valiant 18 (don't ask) does it's best boat speed up wind - although it doesn't point as high as I'd like - in a chop (We get white tops of the lake, ask TCM, he remarked on them) yet down wind it is a slug.
I'd thought of a Swift 18, but we day sail and the cockpit looks a bit small at the expense of accommodation. I'm looking for a Hunter 19 or Europa fin.

I have recently bought a Swift 18. can anyone tell me what the rams horn arrangement on the boom is for, also the several lanyards running through the boom

Can't quite picture 'the ramshorn arrangement' but the lines inside the boom are usually for the clew outhaul used to tension the foot of the sail. There should be a 'tale' hanging out the aft end that runs over a small sheave to attach to the clew and another emerging from the underside of the boom at the gooseneck (or at least well towards it) that you haul on to tension everything. This one is then cleated off either on the boom or led back somewhere to a cleat.

The "rams horn" are for reefing, at least they are if they are at the front end. The lines inside the boom are the reefing lines possibly.
